Psych at UVA

I've been accepted to UVA OOS (woohoo!) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me (from personal experience, maybe?) how the psych department is here. I've also been accepted at UMich, who I know has an amazing program for undergrads, and I'm trying to narrow my decision between the two. Thanks!

Congrats on getting in! I just finished my 1st semester, and I’m considering a psych major, may eventually go into Genetic Counseling. I took Child Psychology with John Bonvilian last semester and really enjoyed it. He was an engaging lecturer, and hearing firsthand about the research he has done was interesting. I’ve heard good things about other psych professors too, especially Timothy Wilson (Social Psychology) and another man who teaches Cognitive Psychology. So, in terms of lecturers, I think UVA’s psych program is very strong. They also offer a fantastic range of courses (Intro Psych, Abnormal Psych, Memory Distortions, Language Development, etc.-- just reading the list makes me excited!) Here is a link to a list of psych classes for spring 2013. [UVa Class Schedule for Spring 2013 (Unofficial.
You can also do psych research in your later undergrad years. As part of Child Psych, I had to fulfill the 6 hour experimental participation requirement (aka I was a human guinea pig for a few weeks), so I became familiar with some of the experiments. They were really interesting; if research is something you think you’d enjoy, you should definitely look into UVA and the opportunities available for undergrads.
I’m not familiar with the University of Michigan so I can’t compare the programs, but as a potential psych major I recommend that you seriously consider UVA and try to learn more about the program before you make a final decision. Maybe you could visit UVA and sit in on a psych lecture/talk to a psych professor.

Thank you so much! It’s always helpful to hear from someone who’s experienced it themselves.

My daughter had Personality Psych last semester with Allison somebody or other and really enjoyed it.

i’m a psych major at uva currently! i think it’s a really good program, i’ve taken 3 psych classes already and am currently enrolled in 3 more in addition to research. most of the psych classes are relatively large, but i bet it’s like that at umich considering psych is a popular major and the intro classes at state universities as a whole are large. that being said, every professor i’ve had has been great and really willing and wanting to get to know me and help me when needed. additionally, all the ta’s i’ve had with the exception of 1 have been helpful as well. message me if you want any specifics!
