Can I finish all both degrees within 5 semesters? I'm using next year to clear up all the prereq... but I'm worried 5 semesters might not be enough :(. Can someone tell me if that's doable? I dont want to hit the unit ceiling before I graduate!

Are you currently in your fourth semester, or an incoming junior transfer?

What courses have you already taken?

Psychology: 7 prerequisite courses + 8 upper division courses = 15 courses
Economics: 5-7 prerequisite courses + 7 more upper division courses = 12-14 courses
Statistics 20 or 21 overlap: -1 course
Reading and composition: 2 courses
L&S breadth: if you choose carefully, you can cover 5 of the 7 with your majors (BS, HS, IS, PV, SBS), leaving only 2 courses (AL, PS)
American cultures: if you choose carefully, should be covered by a course for one of your majors or the AL breadth

So this is a total of 30-32 courses. If a typical course load is 4 courses per semester, it should fit in 8 total semesters with careful schedule planning. However, if this is your fourth semester and you have taken a lot of courses not needed for either major or breadth, you may not have enough room to take the remaining courses without overloading.

Possible AP credit:

3 on AP calculus: -1 or -2 courses (Math 1A, or 1A-1B for 5 on BC)
4 on AP economics (both): -1 course (Economics 1)
4 on AP psychology: -1 course (Psychology 1)
5 on AP US or comparative government: -1 course (one of the social science prerequisite courses for psychology major)

Oh I’m currently a freshmen (sophomore next year). Sorry for the confusion ucb!

You want to finish in a total of 7, 8, or 9 semesters (including the 2 semesters for your freshman year)?

Whether it is doable depends on what courses you have already taken, and what AP credit you came in with.

So I’m clearing all the prereq for both majors by summer 2013 (next year). I’ll declare and start taking upper div courses for my remaining semesters (I don’t mind taking a 9th semester, but I’m just curious if I can finish in time for that).

Tell me if you’re confused! Sorry again. So basically I’ll be done with all the prereq by summer 2013 (and most likely declare then).

If you finish prerequisites, but no upper division major courses (other than one of Economics 100A/100B/101A/101B needed to declare the major), then you will have 15 upper division courses for the majors left. If you take 4 courses per semester, that will give you slots for 16 courses in 4 semesters (total of 8), so if you have no more than 1 breadth left, you can finish in 8 total semesters without overloading if you plan carefully. If you take 9 total semesters, then you have 5 extra slots for breadth or additional free electives without overloading.

Of course, if you are willing to take 5 courses per semester, you will have plenty of schedule space to finish in 8 semesters, and may even be able to finish in 7 semesters.

In any case, you need to choose courses carefully, so that every course fulfills some major prerequisite or requirement, and/or a breadth requirement.

Thank you very much ucbalmunus! Since both majors allow students to take up to 2 upper divs to fulfill both majors at the same time, I can do that if the course is approved correct?

Don’t see why not in theory, but the psychology major’s upper division requirements are all psychology courses, and the economics major’s [list of non-economics courses allowed for upper division requirements](Major Requirements | Department of Economics) does not include any psychology courses.

Awesome! Thank you so much ucbalmunus! I’m less paranoid now!

Just saying, you can definitely do it - I know a number of business/psych double majors who do research with me and have found it extremely manageable, and business requirements are more strict than econ. (though this is just speculation)
