I'm interested in majoring in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. I know that it's a bit early to be thinking about majors but going to a university in Massachusetts has been a dream of mine.

Before packing my bags and heading off north, I would like to know what some current students think about the program. I would really appreciate any advice/comments that you have.

(I am also open to other colleges in Massachusetts with great psychology programs)

I don’t know anything about the psychology program in particular, but lately UMASS has been socked by severe budget cuts, and this “money money money” mentality is evident in just about every facet of the university. From e-mails from the chancellor asking students to be “UMASS Advocates” and raise money, to increased difficulty gaining access to needed articles to grad students not being allowed to use the student gym without paying additional funds…it’s kind of sad. I bring this up because you say “heading off north.” I assume this means you’ll be out of state- if you’re not from New England, than pay attention to the fact that you will never, ever get in-state residency. Unlike most colleges which allow you to become an in-state student after proof of living in-state for one year, UMASS will only give you in-state tuition rates if you can prove you moved to MA for some reason other than school. This means you’ll be taking (minimally) 30K/year in student loans every year of school.
