Psychology---Furman university, need advice,thanks!

I have been accepted by furman university(SC) and I want to study Psy.
But furman seems not to be a very popular college and lots of my friends said some bad things about it.

I haven't visit its campus so I am not sure about their comments.

I want everyone's advice and oppinion about furman university. It gonna help me a lot!!

Thank you very much!!!

No one knows about it? I know it is not a very popular college on CC…

Furman is a very pretty school and well-loved by graduates. Middle son applied there and was also accepted, but turned them down due to poor FA - the worst of any of his schools. If you can afford the school and like it, go there. Who cares what others think? Graduates tend to go places and do well. Hop on the Furman thread under alphabetical list of colleges and read the college cost thread. While a bit of it deals with Furman’s shift away from aid, there are also posts on there talking about what grads have done that could be beneficial for you to read.

(I should probably also mention that my guy was unlikely to head to Furman anyway, but not because he didn’t like the school. He had already decided that he wants more research options and with a great financial offer from the University of Rochester - they have neuro, cognitive/behavioral and psych all with oodles of research - it only made sense to choose them in his case. He would have loved the atmosphere at Furman too though.)

Thank you very much for your reply and congratulations on your son’s offer from Rochester! The FA in Furman isn’t always satisfiable. I hope Furman can meet my financial need although I know it’s not very possible.

Sorry I can’t find those posts on CC. Can you help me?

Furman’s a good school and I would not hesitate to send my kids there. I happen to know the VP of financial aid there. If you want to go to furman and the aid package isn’t enough for you to afford it, let his staff know. I can’t promise they’ll give you the aid package that you want, but I can promise they’ll treat you well.

Here’s the Furman thread I was talking about…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/furman-university/1291771-furman-university-cost.html</a></p>

Once finished with that, click on “Furman” right above it and you’ll get other threads in their folder. It is a nice school. It’s just pricey and not good with aid (for most of us - there should be a few who got decent aid).

Furman is a VERY well respected college with a very rigorous academic reputation. It has stellar faculty. Its a stunningly gorgeous campus on 250 acres, including a lake.

Its like a country club there. Greenville is one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. A very very nice city.

Furman graduates do very well in placement for graduate school, medical school and law school.

Several Presidents have spoken there.

Its faculty is liberal but its student body is a majority of conservatives, though liberal students are well accepted.

Its the mirror image of Davidson and Wake Forest, only in South Carolina.

Furman is a fantastic college! I have tons of friends there and they all love it.

Here are a few quotes from others about Furman’s psych dept. from a poster familiar with the department.

“Psychology at Furman is a nationally recognized program that has produced a large number of people with doctorates working all over the USA.”

and

“Psych at Furman is taught as a hard science with many research and lab components more in keeping with the father of behavioral psych, Watkins. The lab skills that psych majors master puts them in a strong position for grad school in medical and clinical pathways”

I have only heard great things about their science department. Psych is one of the most difficult majors at Furman. Well respected and well regarded when applying to grad schools.

I have a student at Furman and I am happy to say she is learning and thriving there. She receives a lot of attention and great feedback from her professors. She also makes good use of their internship office. They are just fabulous in helping place students into internships either in the Greenville area or in the students hometown, or elsewhere actually.

Good luck!

Greenville is a fabulous city that has a nice amount of night life for college students and adults alike.

I would take the “Furman University cost” thread with a grain of salt. That thread was a bit hard on Furman as the parents were upset that their kids did not get the top scholarships offered and thus would have a fairly large expense. Most of the folks were dealing with their first student entering college and were blindsided by the reality of college expense.

Money often has a way of working out and certain departments have access to scholarship monies. We are pleased with what has been offered and were told by the faculty that worked with us to ask for more if it was still a stretch. The initial scholarship offer was very close the range we were hoping for given our EFC/CSS.

BTW, the notorious John Watson of the Little Albert experiment graduated from Furman (a little psych trivia for you). Our older child was a neuroscience concentration/psych and music major at a different strong LAC. She thought Furman had some great psych choices.

The city of Greenville is amazing. S fell in love with it and loved the variety of restaurant choices downtown-lots of great, privately owned choices
