HI guys! So I’ve decided to apply RD at Johns Hopkins! I want to major in psych, so I was wondering what the psychology department is like, and whether it would be good for me if I would like to later become a school psychologist.
Hello! I’m a current freshman neuroscience/psych double major at JHU. I’m still fairly new so I’m not completely in the know yet, but from what I’ve seen our psych department is pretty great! It’s definitely very focused on experimental psych (which makes sense, given the whole “first research institution” and all). The department is pretty small, but the professors are all great, and there’s at least one faculty member for almost every subfield (one for social psych, one for abnormal/clinical psych, etc), and cognitive psych especially has a big presence. They also launched a student mentorship program this year too, so freshmen get assigned an upperclassman psych mentor to help pick classes and apply to labs. And speaking of labs, what’s great about JHU is that research is so accessible and encouraged-- it actually fills a req for the psych major-- so you can start as early as freshman year and work on some really interesting projects. Since you want to be a school psychologist, you might be interested in the Lab For Child Development; it’s one of the most prominent psych labs here and does a ton of really fascinating work in developmental/cognitive psych.
