Psychology or Anatomy & Physiology??

I'm debating on whether to take AP Psych or H Anat & Phys my senior year. I'm interested in pre-med as well as psychology which is why the decision is a bit difficult for me. Advice please? Thanks!(:

take it if your interested

My daughter had to make the same decision. Then due to a scheduling conflict, she ended up picking a different course.

It’ll really come down to your personal preference, the particular teachers who teach these courses at your school, the other course you’ll taking at the same time, etc.

My daughter asked my advice, and FWIW, here are some of the factors she considered:
In favor of A & P:

  1. There is a lot to memorize (especially in the anatomy part), so taking it now may help later.
  2. She had a strong interest in it due to possibly wanting to major in bio.
    Against taking A & P:
  3. It seemed like the course was geared to students who would enter nursing and allied health professions after high school.
  4. If she decided to go premed in college, she’d have plenty of opportunities to take bio courses.
  5. Since she’d probably take at least physiology as part of a bio major, why not take it at the college level.
  6. The time spent memorizing the anatomy part would take study time away from other memory-intensive courses, e.g., a difficult language course
    In favor of AP Psych:
  7. It was taught by an award-winning teacher.
  8. She could get college credit if she scored high enough on the AP exam.
  9. It would be a more enjoyable course than A & P and she already had signed up for a tough math course and another AP science course
    Against taking AP Psych:
  10. AP courses sometimes are taught to the test and are not always quite the same as an actual college course in a particular subject, IMO.
  11. AP Psych is a year-long course; usually Intro Psych in college is only a semester course.
  12. Some college psych depts. seem to prefer that you take their own Intro Psych course, especially if you major in their dept.
  13. Some colleges offer an honors section for Intro Psych, which you possibly might prefer if you’re admitted to the honors program in college
  14. Some colleges offer several alternative intro psych courses (e.g., Intro Cognitive Psych or Intro brain & behavior) as prerequisites for more advanced courses rather than just the traditional Gen Psych course
  15. I have a hard time believing that a high school psychology teacher will be as current in the field as a college prof. (On the other hand, both probably will teach from the text, and even the college psych prof will not be current in all the subfields outside his/her specialty)
  16. If you decide to major in psychology, there will be plenty of time to take psych courses in college
Against taking both A & P or AP Psych:
IMO, neither course is a core academic course—it might be better to take a more advanced chemistry or physics course or another history course
If it’s just for an elective, it might even be better to take an Art or Music course because you might be less likely to take one in college

If you enjoy one more than the other, take that one as neither is viewed as significantly more rigorous. If there is not one that you think will be more enjoyable, take AP Psych, higher GPA FTW.

If you’re going to major in neuroscience as pre-med, take AP Psych for the credit.

Anatomy is the much more useful course in my opinion. You need the course to be familiar with the college level equivalent.

Depends on your interests. I’ve taken both AP Psychology, and Honors Anatomy + Physiology and both courses are really interesting.

If you’re planning on being a pre med neuroscience major- AP Psych all the way! If you’re planning on becoming a Biology pre med major then Anatomy would be a smart move.

Both courses require memorization. In Anatomy you often get to do interesting labs though, and you don’t have to take an AP Exam(good and bad). I would personally say AP Psychology is the way to go but I’m a bit biased as Psychology is one of my favorite subjects.:)
