What's the main difference between the two majors? I'm just curious because a lot of the human development classes are psychology related.

My D is a freshman HD major. Seems like the biggest difference is that the HD major is more flexable as to tailor your courses to what you want to do upon graduating. They have a track for those wanting to go to med. school, another for clinical psych., etc. In addition the HD majors lead Cornell in % of students participating in reasearch on campus (source is prof. who spoke with HD parents at orientation).

I’m a sophomore HD major and there are definitely differences.

1) HD is definitely broader, and focuses on not only psychology, but aspects of biology, philosophy and sociology as well.
2) HD is more focused on developmental psychology throughout the lifespan, while psychology focuses on like biopsych, cogsci, social psych etc.
3) HD graduates go on to a wider variety of fields than psych majors, including med school, grad school, business school, law school and straight into employment (in the government, public service sector, medical etc).
4) HD has more opportunities for research (I’m working in a lab as a sophomore and I know some labs have taken second semester freshmen)…
