PT job versus other ECs? Significant difference for college apps?

DS is a freshman in high school and so far doing very well. If things continue he should have a very strong application to a top 20-top 50 university. He plays club soccer and JV soccer, tennis, has done well at math competitions and programming. He is trying to find a group of middle schoolers to teach in competition math but there seems to be very little interest in our community. He has contacted several of the better local middle school math teachers but none will respond to his emails.

I would like for him to get a job and there are some local fast food places nearby. DS would definitely benefit from a job but I am concerned this would not look as good on a future college application as other ECs might? Do top colleges favorably consider jobs for kids that are full pay? My wife and I do not need the money for his college but I think there is value if he works and saves for his future expenditures.

Part-time jobs are a very valid extra curricular activity, and some colleges look upon them more favorably than the typical high school club. As you stated above, a lot can be learned from any kind of job (responsibility, teamwork, etc).

Also, I noted during this application season that many colleges have a special section for paid work. The Common App might also have that.

If he can swing it with his studies, a job would not impact the application negatively and, in fact, could be favorable. But don’t do it for that reason alone. Also, you might want to check your state labor laws - here you have to be a minimum age plus get a work permit from the school.

I would definitely have him work over the summer, but if he is doing well in academics and sports I am not sure I would make him work unless it is needed for finances.

Most fast food places, at least near me, don’t hire until 16. Let him be a kid for a little while longer.
