Interesting High School jobs

Hi parents,
I'm a senior in HS this year already accepted and decided on a college. I would really like to start a part time job second semester because I have more time and less stress. I know I can still work those typical jobs at a restaurant, retail, etc. but I was wondering if any of your children have worked some interesting high schools jobs that might even pay better. For example, I've thought about tutoring middle school or elementary school kids in their subjects. Any other ideas?

Hi jcy - congratulations on finally reaching the end of that long college search. I worked in HS and through college at a local hospital, working in patient/emergency room admissions, plus patient relations, which was like being a glorified candy striper, collecting TV/phone fees, etc., but it paid well! I always worked holidays so that the regular staff can be homw with their families, and I got paid time and a half. Perhaps there are similar clerical-like positions in health care that you could look into, if you have computer experience you can look into medical records work or even transcription. GOOD LUCK!

Become a certified lifeguard. There is a shortage of them and the pay is usually quite good. Hours vary according to the job. DD did this...some kids worked the early morning before school at the Y. Others did afternoons, evening or weekends. Summer jobs as lifeguards around here are plentiful. If you get an indoor job...you don't have to worry about weather. DD's pay was at least $2 more than minimum wage on her FIRST job...and went up from there.

congrats on your college acceptance jcy. If you are into sports or like the game of soccer) you can become a certified soccer referee. Pretty good stuff, you could ref recreational games as well as travel soccer games.Oh and did I say great pay? :-)

Your work ethic is admirable and it is refreshing to see that rather than slacking off now, which you could do, you want to now find a great job.
Good luck in your search but I am sure you are aware that in this economy it might be hard to find a well paying part time job.
My D is already trying to hatch a plan for a summer job after graduation. If she can't find anything at a retail clothing or department store (those employee discounts are really nice for getting clothes for college!) she might work at a school uniform store which may or may not be more recession proof.
She is also trying to think outside the box for work as well.
Good luck

thanks for the tips! learninginprog, good call. you reminded me of when i was pursuing basketball refereeing last year. I heard that pays well...

It doesnt help that I live in the midwest. Adults can't find jobs here..it's gonna be tough for a kid to find one.

Can you sing or dance or play an instrument or have some kind of talent? One of my kids (a gymnast with a strong dance background) signed up with a local talent agency in high school and she and her teammates got some interesting jobs performing at large conferences, conventions, half-time shows, and even a high-end birthday party--(the birthday boy's Dad owned a football team). She was paid well, but the work wasn't that steady. This was the agency--there located in several areas. Cast of Thousands

DS worked both as soccer ref and lifeguard. Both take some up-front certification, but set you up for good college part-time jobs. You need a thick skin and parental-diplomacy for any kind of reffing (some sports are worse than others, baseball ump is likely the worst) even with the little tykes. Pay for both ($18+/hr) is better than retail or fast food, and hours are flexible. He didn't tutor, but that has a ton of potential too...

The theatre kids around here contract w/ party planners and work children's parties as misc. princesses and characters. Not sure about the pay on that.

Congratulations!

Tutoring is a great idea.Have you thought of developing your own small business in tutoring, or maybe work on one that can go into full swing in the summer? Ebay, webpage design, catering, car washing/detailing, window washing, landscaping, junk removal, daycamp chauffeur...depending upon your strengths and interests...
