Public Ivy Leagues

If that list is in order, no way Texas is below UCSD, Illinois, UNC, UVA, and Washington! It’s not possible looking at the departmental rankings across all the academic and professional schools.

^ Okay, but you can not get all your wishes: :)

UCB
Michigan
Wisconsin
UCLA
Uva
UNC
Texas
Illinois
UCSD
Wash

These are just lists of what are widely considered the top public universities. So, is there any point in calling them Public Ivies? Or, do y’all have any other criteria why it’s even a useful term to apply to this group of public universities?

It is very tempting for me to replace UCSD with TOSU, but I will wait until around 2015 for a decisive academic upgrade. :p

As for now, UCSD is certainly seen more favorable than TOSU based on the rankings. However, know that SD lacks overall academic breadth and depth when compared to Ohio State. TOSU is certainly more well-rounded and complete as a state’s flagship school. In fact, TOSU contains nearly 2x the undergrad student bodies, likewise, 3x the graduate student bodies than SD. TOSU pursues a comprehensive teaching / learning approach, in which it offers over 12,000 courses and employees 3x more tenure-track faculties than SD, and covers all professional schools (Med, Law, Dental, Vet, Pharm and even Optometry). TOSU academics include nearly all disciplines with over $5 billion annual operational budget and 4x the endowment compared to SD. Most importantly, state-of-the-art facilities throughout the entire campus! Last but not least, top notch Div-1A athletic programs which SD offers none (Div-II).

I see UCSD as more of a 2-D school - more similar to GTech and Purdue than the all-inclusive flagships Public Ivies listed above.

P.S. Contrast to TOSU which receives strong state legislature support, and a world class library (6 million volumes), SD is currently forced to sell its library collections in order to make ends meet. This alone should DQ SD from the list of Top Public Ivies! :D

i think university of south carolina is the USC that he/she is referring to

“Since 2008-09, we have already taken about $5 million in cuts,” said Brian Schottlaender, the university’s library director. “We have managed to take a series of small cuts — reduced hours in several of our libraries, consolidated service points, slowed down our digitization efforts.

“But when we found out we would have to take at least an additional $3 million in cut in 2011-12, it became absolutely clear we could not do it with these nickel and dime cuts any more.”

To deal with the cuts, the university has closed its medical center library, the International Relations & Pacific Studies library, and the Center for Library & Instructional Computing Services. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is slated to be closed next year.

Source: [UCSD Considers Closing Four Libraries | San Diego Reader](UCSD Considers Closing Four Libraries | San Diego Reader)

So, besides liquidating part of school’s library collections, one or more libraries were/are to be closed due to $5 million budget cut. If that were the case, I consider UCSD to be rather unstable compared to tOSU. Even with $50 million budget cut, I doubt tOSU will be closing any of its libraries. Now that I am home, I see UCSD actually tied with TOSU in terms of “Undergrad Academic Reputation Index” on last year’s USNWR ranking. So I guess they are peers at the undergrad level. Even their freshman selectivity is nearly identical in terms of SAT/ACT scores, but SD does have much lower acceptance rate with “100%” Top-10% HS Class vs 55% TOSU.

Anyway, UCSD needs fundrasing campaign, or perhaps borrow some money from either UCB or UCLA if possible. Probably easier from UCLA due to its proximity.

Michigan State?

Ohio State, Texas and UNC should be on here before MSU

as is ohio state…

Another one bites the dust… Perhaps Dr. Sullivan could now be considered the job of either Illinois or UCB’s Chancellor / Presidency…

Meanwhile, the establishment of The New World Order in terms of “Top-10 Public Ivies” of 2020 is as followed imho:

UCB
UNC
UVA
UDub
UCLA
TOSU
Texas
Illinois
Michigan
Wisconsin

(in no particular order)

Top-10 Public Ivies of 2020

UCB (PAC-12)
UNC (ACC)
UVA (ACC)
UCLA (PAC-12)
tOSU (B1G)
Texas (BIG-XII)
Illinois (B1G)
Michigan (B1G)
Wisconsin (B1G)
Washington (PAC-12)

4 B1G, 3 PAC-12, 2 ACC & 1 BIG-XII

*And Yes! TOSU would have made the Top-8 list as well imho by 2020!! :)

Or maybe UW Madison Chancellor.

Sullivan was an excellent provost at Michigan. Something must really be amiss at UVA. This cannot bode well for that school.

Sullivan’s dismissal a sign of the times?

Although as one of the most well-endowed (over $5 billion) public schools in the nation, UVA is not immune to the current political / economical climate surrounding the school.

Wonder if she’s a candidate for Berkeley’s new chancellor?

Be ready for an exodus of faculties at this fine public ivy… lol

I don’t think so. Very loyal, low turnover place. Pay goes a long way there. Ideal lifestyle.

That’s what I was thinking. IMO she’ll certainly be on the short-list of candidates by November. Perhaps she’s already been notified that they’re strongly considering her, hence why it was a ‘mutual agreement’ of resignation. Given that the pool of potential chancellors for Berkeley is very small, this isn’t far-fetched at all, esp. considering that Berkeley would be trying to poach its leader from another top public.

I wonder what must Dr. Sullivan did so terribly wrong to have an institution with 8 Presidents total in its 200-years of history to axe her in 2-years of tenure. This reminds me of Gee’s time at Brown… lol
