Does majoring in public policy serve as a feasible segway to an investment banking or sales and trading career? I know that quantitative ability is something banks really hold in high importance. However, I'm a lot more interested in Pub Pol than I am in Econ because I like the subject matter a lot more and am still not entirely sure that I want to go into Wall Street, since I can definitely envision myself going into the non-profit sector out of college or working for the Peace Core for some time. Currently, I'm tenatively planning on majoring in Public Policy, minoring in Chinese and getting a certificate in Markets and Management Studies. Will this type of education be adequate for me to get interviews in the IBD/S&T divisions of banks and succeed in these fields should I decide to pursue a career in finance? Also, what is the suggested GPA range?

most of the ppl ive heard of going into i-banking are econ majors, many with an mms certificate. i think it will be fine if you do pps, but you def need to take some upper econ classes to get the skills you need.

The investment banks do not care what you major in as long as you show an interest in finance, whether it be activities, classes, and/or previous internship.

The majors vary from sociology all the way to engineering.

Recommended GPA is 3.5 and up, all though leeway is granted depending on your connections, past internships and of course -- luck.

When and how does one about getting an internship ideally? I know PPS majors have to do an internship between junior and senior year summers so that takes away that summer from me.

Is there any way to do the PPS internship between sophomore and junior year?

I say this because students typically do their internships on Wall Street between the junior and senior year in order to get the full-time offer for the following year.

Sure, theoretically, you could still do the PPS internship between junior and senior year, then go for full-time recruiting in the fall; however, those interview slots are typically taken by individuals with prior IBD/S&T internships -- as FT recruiting has a huge bias in favor of students with this type of experience.

I believe the PPS internship experience can be any summer -- at the very least, I know a few people from class of '05 who did it after sophomore summer.

S1 is a junior in Pratt (ECE and also Comp Sci) and has had several I-Banking/Consulting Firm interviews which have led to second interviews. He already has one I-Banking offer, and will hear about the others this week. He has been very excited about the process he is going through, and thought Duke was doing a great job attracting the businesses!

Whatever you decide to major in make sure it is something you enjoy. You are way more likely to do well (and thus have an easier time landing whatever opportunities you want down the line) if you are studying in a field that you find exciting.

Oh and its the Peace Corps not Core. (just FYI)
