public universities bad bargain for middle class

It doesn’t make sense to call something a bad bargain when there’s no alternative available. “Bad bargain” implies there’s a better bargain to be had. Full-need schools like HPY have places for only a tiny fraction of the college-bound population.

FOR REAL he works nearly 40 hours/wk this past fall and currently. He is only in 4 classes this year because he just transferred schools and he didn’t know if it would be harder. Before that he was always between 25-40 depending on the schedule.

He works at a home improvement store so he has weekend hours, early morning and nights also.

A typical week could be Sunday from 11-7 or 7-430, Class Monday 8-12 (8-915, 925-1040, 1050-1205) and work 2-930, wed he has class 8-12 and night class 430-7, Tues./Thu/fri/sat/sun he will work probably all but one day, about 8 hour shifts. Sometimes he gets a vacation or sick day and in some weeks will get away with only 30 hours. Basically he has 2 days off and one is Wed due to night class.

He has a steady job. The company decided at the end of last summer that employees would be full-time or part-time and part-time would only get 10 hourss…He might stay with 4 classes and take longer to graduate, but at least he is earning $ along the way. Pay is about $12/hr maybe a little more and he is hoping for a promotion.

I will admit that he is often miserable, probably because he doesn’t exactly love the job or homework. Don’t worry, he makes time to play! He seems to think he NEEDS the $, but he doesn’t, however 10 hours a week wouldn’t cut it either. I wish it was 20-25. We have him pretty well covered so the $ is for car expenses, most of his clothes, and going out. I don’t know what’s in the bank but I think it’s a lot. I’m okay with that because he will be able to buy instead of renting when he moves out in a couple years.

I DID say that he is not overly studious. He won’t have an “A” average, but he could if he spent more time. He doesn’t have an “A” because he doesn’t put the time in, not really because he doesn’t HAVE the time. I don’t think he would get A’s even if he only worked 5 hours! (he does get some…but he’s not the typical student on this site!)

My whole point was that a studious student should be able to manage a 20 hour work schedule IF THEY NEED IT.
