What kind of impact does published research in a reputed scientific journal have on the admissions process? I know that it obviously won't hurt, but is there some context that anyone could provide on how much it would help? I have published an article on the exfoliation and chemical modification of carbon based nano structures in Chemical Communications? Is that up there with placing in a competition like Siemens/Intel/ISEF?

Unfortunately, no, because a good chunk of kids who submit to them also have their research published. However, it is something that not everyone applying will have, so it will help. It also shows that you were serious about your research and possibly made a great discovery. So it helps, but it’s not as unique nor helpful as winning a top prize at those competitions.

Ah damn. Alright well thanks though!
