My research was published in the International Journal of Scientific and Engineering Research last year. Although I know that this is not a “top” journal or even ranked, do you think colleges will look favorably upon me taking the initiative to undergo the peer review process and get my work published?
Yes
Ditto. They are not going to look unfavorably upon it.
Did you write the publication?
were you listed as first author?
If not, where on the list of authors/ co-authors does your name fall?
Yes, I wrote the paper myself, with a review by my mentor.
I am the sole author.
It cant hurt!
It is a pay to play journal. I don’t know how that will help you
Is it a peer-reviewed journal?
Do you have any citations yet?
Have you continued that line of research, and which journal(s) do you and your mentor plan to submit the next article(s) to?
“It is a pay to play journal.”
Oh, in that case, its no more than posting a blog and wont mean a thing.
IF on the other hand, you are continuing your research with a Mentor who is a PhD and noted in his field, who can AND will write a strong LOR for you- that can make a difference.
Of course it’ll be looked at favorably! It’s a great thing to do man! Keep up the good work and keep focusing on your passion. Try to do Siemen’s and Intel as well!
@neoking: re-read posts 6 and 8. It’s like self publishing a book. Google the title and you’ll see reams of actual researchers who steer clear.
@T26E4 Oh wow, I actually didn’t read any of the posts. Hmm… Well that does change things up a bit.
I did some more research, and indeed, this journal has a very low impact factor and isn’t recognized by a lot of places.
So I guess it can’t hurt that he published a paper, but it probably won’t mean too much if adcoms understand the nature of this journal.
It is fun to publish and see your name in print. Certainly, include mention of it in your application materials. But don’t oversell it.
