Puerto Rico....

Hi,

I have a couple of questions as to how living in Puerto Rico might affect my chances of getting into a good school. In my school, I don't choose my courses and AP classes aren't even offered until Senior year. Even then I can only take AP for math, English and Spanish. I want to get into an ivy league but Im concerned about being able to get in if i don't have AP courses or an unweighted GPA (my school only uses the weighted system) Does anyone know if admissions takes this into consideration when evaluating an application?

Yes, admissions officers take your opportunities at your school into consideration.

Being Puerto Rican helps, but not just living in PR.

The previous two posts have succintly answered your question. However, if I may: can I advise you spend some time on some of those schools’ admissions webpages? It seems you are at the early stages of learning their evaluative criteria. While GPA, transcript and test scores are very important, given the # of applicants to the top colleges, they weigh many other factors as well – ones you should become familiar with.

Not many schools’ counselor staff know the ins and outs of very selective college applications. Plz come back and ask questions (or search older threads) for info you’re lacking. Best of luck to you.

Thank you! I’m glad they take it into consideration and it helps that I’m Puerto Rican. And thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely look at their admissions pages more.

See the Hispanics Student forum (under College Admissions, Speciality Topics) for information about scholarships, admissions, fly-ins, etc.
