As the title above says, I got into both SUNY Purchase and Potsdam and am having trouble choosing which one I would like to go to. I’m looking to either major in literature or history in hopes of becoming a teacher, and I would like a small college (which both are) that is very easy to make friends at, since I can be shy at times. I also want a college with a good town, or a town nearby.
Which one is best, academically and socially?
I don’t know much about Potsdam, except that it’s in a snowy area with outdoor sports opportunities. That may appeal to you. Purchase is just outside of NYC and you can get into the City for museums, internships, plays, events.
My impulse is to say Purchase might be better because of its arty influence, too.
Maybe a visit to each school might be worth your time.

The kids I know who went to college in Potsdam all transferred out because they hated the town. However, all were at Clarkson and not SUNY. My friend, parent of one of the kids who transferred, told me the town was horrible. Her child is now at Sarah Lawrence, which is in the same county as Purchase, and is loving it there.
My S17 was accepted to Purchase. He liked the town but isn’t sure if he will attend because of the program issues.
Purchase is kind of a suitcase school. But it is close to White Plains and trains to NYC. But not a typical “college town”.
