Purdue versus Illinois

I am in to Purdue, and I find out whether I get into Illinois on Friday. Right now UIUC is my #1 and Purdue is my #2. If I get into Illinois, I am 99% sure I'll go, and if I don't, I'll go to Purdue, which is fine by me. If I get in to UIUC, I will fly up next week to see if I like it, and if I do, I'll go. Does anyone have a reason for me to consider waiting longer to think about Purdue a little longer? Thanks very much!

Why not just visit both? West Lafayette is only a couple of hours away from Champaign, and that way you won't wonder about if you would have liked Purdue better.

I would say Illinois is a lot better than purdue.
Purdue rank is going down recently. Now, even wisconsin is better than purdue. I can say GA tech=Illinois=Michigan> texas>wisconsin>=purdue

Please read the "rankings aren't everything" threads.

I went to Illinois for my masters and taught undergrads there, and I wouldn't say it's any better than Purdue. I would also say that you really can't rank Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, and Purdue without it being exceedingly subjective.

Go and find a place where you can learn and live and be happy. You'll get a really good education no matter which place you go, and your job and grad options will be excellent with a degree and good GPA/recs from either program.

What I meant was that my plan was just to visit UIUC if I got in, and if I liked it, go ahead and dedicate myself there. What I'm asking for is if Purdue has any especially redeeming qualities that should make me wait and think about it a little longer.

First of all.. whats your intended major?
Secondly, GA tech = illinois = michigan > texas > wisconsin >= purdue... Where does that come from?

I would choose Purdue if it were cheaper for you.

Both schools are fantastic and will give you the same opportunites.

For my school... purdue is for people who get rejected from Illinois... I would say student at Illinois are of better quality...

Purdue vs Urbana Champaign? : Undergrduate Computer Engineering

Hi,
I`m from India having not much knowledge of the American Universities.
I have recvd admit confirmations from both Purdue & Univ of Illinois at Urbana Champaign for their 4 year undergraduate programme in Computer Engineering and am in the usual dilemma... which to confirm?

Rankings ... Illinois is better ranked but Purdue is not ranked really much below and has a reputation of being a pure engineering institute.

I don`t know much about the quality of their courses, programmes, faculty and facilities in Computer Engineering undergarduate department.

Kindly guide me. Thanks a ton

I see that both schools have Indian Student Associations. Perhaps you could contact the people there for some insight.

I'm a UIUC Eng. grad and have a nephew that attended Purdue engineering. I'd say the schools are more alike than different. Perhaps considering the demographics (as a foreign student) would be a good idea, to see where you'd feel more at home. Some people like Purdue better because it's smaller, but you can end up taking LONG hikes at both schools.

I wouldn't say that. UIUC has a slightly better reputation for engineering. HAL was born there...

shivkhemka,

Both schools are good. UIUC may be a little more respected, and have more options in case you don't like engineering. I'd definitely factor in cost to your decision...will one be significantly more expensive than the other for you?

In term of students, I would say Illinois students are alot better (considering only international students and OOS, not sure about instate). For instance, in my CS lecture class... I know atleast 3-4 international students in the class who went to IOI (One got a bronze medal for India last year). And I also know some more who represented their country in IMO or physics olympiad. However I never heard that there is any international student at purdue with this calibre.

...and I never heard that there is any international student at purdue who can ride a unicycle, but I would still not make a claim that this meant it held true in all cases... Then again, it doesn't seem like either of us are there to bear witness to such things. I am skeptical about that claim...

Purdue is just as excellent as Illinois. Either program would give you an excellent education. I would highly recommend checking out the cost difference for your personal case.

I am an international student... and I have met MANY successful international alumni who went to Purdue... as well as Illinois and many other reputable public/private and tech schools.

In my opinion, a school like Purdue and Illinois both have everything a student needs including diverse courses, fine professors, and other smart students that have similar interests with you. It really depends how you do in school. So.. I would consider:

Environment

Cost

Weather

Weather

Weather

So yeah, definitely check Illinois out before you attend. Best lucks.

To iwotic:

I also know a friend's brother got into MIT but decided to go to VT. I think he went to grad school at Wisconsin and majored in physics... Anyways, my point is that he is doing extremely well right now.

Heh... unfortunately, weather's just about the same for both. They're only a couple of hours away from each other, and snow is snow is snow. ;)

weather too cold can make you a bit depressed, lonely, homesick, and just wanting to sleep....

Honestly, it depends on what engineering you want to do...if its civil, its gotta be UIUC, but if its aerospace or agricultural then purdues definitely better.

On what basis "definitely better"? From the USNEWS 2008 Rankings for undergrad engineering programs (which is posted on CC), I see for aerospace that UIUC and Purdue are tied for #6. For agricultural engineering, UIUC is ranked #1 and Purdue is ranked #4. Both schools seem to have excellent programs.

They do both have excellent programs. Any sort of ranking between the two is going to be biased and skewed, USN&WR included. Best way to decide is to find the learning environment that you personally prefer and to make your own ranking.
