purpose of CPA outside public accting?

I've always heard that having a cpa opens up a lot of opportunities, but what does exactly does a cpa allow you do to outside of public accting, other than prove your accounting knowledge?

You can become a controller for a company. I think that’s a pretty common thing to do after spending a few years in public accounting.

Any professional designation such as CPA or CFA demonstrates knowledge and professional experience. If I was looking at a resume of 2 individuals with similar work experience, I would likely give the job to the CPA, as he/she has proven they can achieve a goal.
