Purpose of UChicago Extended Essay?

Is it acceptable if I write something creative, even if my response doesn't speak a lot about myself as a person, except that I'm humorous and imaginative?

Or is the entire point just to show that you are humorous and imaginative?

Depends. I usually would advice students to sprinkle some humor and humility in their otherwise solemn and serious essays. But if your essays is nothing but fun and humor, it may backfire on you. Too much of a good thing can be deadly. PM me or email me if you like me to read it.

Most essays for UChicago don’t actually do much about the person except a few certain prompts. However you can use a mixture of real facts followed by humorous exaggeration or ideas. Make your essay both funny and serious. They have this essay to allow you to be creative, have fun with it!

I’m going through this same problem. When I tried combining both creativity and my personal side to the essay, I ended up with a headache and a complex essay that made no sense. I think the best choice is to go back to the basics and answer the prompt. If it lends itself to some personal aspect, go for it. If it doesn’t, don’t try to punch it into a mold that clearly won’t fit your fist.
