I tried hard to write an actual essay for the UChicago “extended essay.” Instead, I wrote an intelligent but irreverent parody of a film noir. This was a much better “essay” for me to write because it exemplified my offbeat sense of humor. I understand that you are supposed to “be yourself” with college essays, but is this too much of “myself?” It makes perfect sense with the prompt, but it’s completely different from any other UChicago essays I’ve read.
The adults I’ve talked to (none of whom share my sense of humor) all told me it was a terrible idea, but I love it. Should I keep going with this weird (but authentic) idea or try to write a new one?
They like quirky at UChicago, don’t they?
I say keep going for now and see where it takes you.
Do it. That’s literally the point of the extended essay.
If it makes sense as a response to the prompt and captures your voice, go for it!
I would say go for it too. I hated my son’s essay. His favorite teacher hated his essay. He used it anyway and feels very strongly that it led to his admission. He has since talked to the admissions officer about it (who sent him a note that mentioned something he personally liked from the essay right after he was accepted) and he said it was a memorable essay because it was so different and they appreciate that at UChicago.
I think the question is whether someone not into noir will get it.
I like the authentic essay. Just make sure you revise just like any essay to correct grammar and syntax, and to remove clumsy constructions and unneeded words. Good luck to you.
