My H finished a Ph.D (at Harvard, full-time and funded)-when he had a family. He was younger than you, but older than most in his program. It can be done.
My question is: why do you want to do this? Do you want to teach engineering at a university or do you have another career goal? You need to be able to articulate your goals clearly if you want to be accepted into a program with funding.
