I want to be a creative director of a consumer mag, but I'm unsure about what to major in, what I need to know to be able to work in this area, what schools have the best programs, and so on...If you have any info about it, please let me know. I've researched some, but I'm unsure of where to go from there.

When you’re looking at one of the most coveted jobs in the industry by many people “below you”(those working under you), going about a career director has nothing to do with the traditional mentality of majoring in something and then getting a job in it(ie nursing, architecture, accounting).

You will have to work your way up from the bottom up, along with all the others who have been working at magazines for years.
Your best bets as a major/minors include humanities, studio art, graphic design, communications, journalism: with extracurricular activities/internships/work experience in things related to magazine/editorial work, such as working as part of your school’s newspaper, yearbook, magazine etc.
Basically there is no one direct nor specific route to be a creative director. Usually your college degree is a minimum requirement, and your resume is what will get you a job or not.

Thanks!
I think im interested in certain types of magazine’s like NYLON or GQ. How doI network to get an internships in those sort of magazine’s and what r the best schools to go to for those. I’m opting for liberal arts schools…is that bad???

Well those are very competitive magazines to get a job at. You don’t just get hired as a creative director, you start at the bottom as an editorial assistant if you can even get a job at that.
Getting internships is not as difficult, but you will end up having to self support yourself while taking these internships if you do not live in the cities, new york or los angeles were these magazines have headquarteres. These internships don’t pay, and you’d be working for free.

GQ is part of condenast, and they offer summer internship programs, you apply directly through condenast website. cc wont allow me to post but here it is. remove the space bars in the web address in the following:
http://www.condenastcareers.co m/internprogra m.cfm

You can also browse the career section of conde nast to look at entry level psoitions as an assistants to get a grasp of what majors/work experience they want.

LACs I think are great, especially if they’re top lacs like vassar wesleyan amherst williams etc…otherwise just aim for the most name recognizable schools you can get into. Also i believe nylon’s website also has internship information for them.

also google the website address of “ed2010” they have listings of magazine internships.

Thanks you sooooo much :)
