Putting Cal Grant B on Hold

Hello, I am currently a community college student. To give you the run down, I am currently on track to spend 3 years at my community college, nearing the end of my 2nd year. I plan on transferring to a 4-Year university for my final two (junior and senior) years. I have submitted my FAFSA for the 17-18 year (third year at CC) already.

However, I understand that the Cal Grant is only allowed for 4 years in total. The issue I have is that if I use up 3 years of Cal Grant eligibility at CC, I will only have 1 year left of Cal Grant available. This means that during my last year at university, I will not have any Cal Grant left over. Please correct me if I am wrong in this regard.

My question is that, is it possible to put my Cal Grant on hold from Community College for my 3rd year, so that when I get to a 4-year university, I will have 2 years of Cal Grant eligibility remaining? I have heard from others that that is the wise thing to do, because Cal Grant @ University provides more money than Cal Grant @ CC. However, I am not sure on the process of doing that.

Thanks for any help.

I think you have to continuously hold the Cal grant but you may be able to “suspend” it. Contact the Calgrant office.
