TAP Helps??

Hi Kevin,
I am transferring hopefully to UCLA. Do you know anyone who was transferring with you who did have TAP but was rejected from UCLA with a Bio major. I have a 3.95 GPA with a Bio major. What are my chances??? Also, how is the atmosphere is UCLA. I heard the college town is great…Thanks!

Definitely, TAP is very helpful from my observation, almost all TAP students that I knew back then are in provided that they have about 3.5+ GPA and completed all major courses. Even though I should not generalize the entire population of TAP students, I do actually believe that they have very high chance of getting in. In your case, assuming you are not missing any major course + TAP + 3.95, sit back, relax and wait for your acceptance letter. It seems like you are 99% in!

how hard is it to get classes as a transfer student?
In a macro sense, this greatly depends on the department and the courses themselves. For example, popular GEs or main required courses are usually filled up faster than electives.

In a micro sense, this depends on the professors. It is not surprising that easier professors’ courses are filled up very quickly.

In a general sense, you will be able to sign up for at least 1-2 courses that you really want except may be accounting courses (very impacted there).

do they put a limit on how many courses u take on your first quarter there? how much? thanks
Technically Yes! 21 quarter units (about 5 courses) maximum per quarter but it is generally no life if you take 4 courses or more @ UCLA in 1 quarter. Trust me, 3 courses already make you no life, not to mention 4!
For comparison purpose, I took 5 semester courses (18 units) at CC with all crazy hard courses like differential equation, biology etc and get straight A (4.0 GPA) while I suffer a lot in my first sem at UCLA with only 3 courses (3 units) all of which are the lower division courses that I was missing from CC.

Thank you Kevin 101. You are really helpful

You are very welcome! I hope you consider UCLA seriously once you are admitted. By the way, don’t just choose Cal over UCLA just for the name if you are admitted to both schools. You should consider all your factors and go with the school that passes your most expectation!

How is the business economics program at UCLA? I know it’s really selective on getting in but I’m just wondering how it squares off against USC Marshall in the Business major.
It has solid reputation, well known to the BIG 4 and many other accounting and financial firms in CA. For example, BIG 4 comes to recruite these bus econ annually especially during Fall. They have some case competitions too. The program itself is really rigorous. The professors are really tough and well known in the field too. To confirm this, I have taken 5 accounting courses and many students there are bus econ. Oh yeah, classmates in that majors generally have high GPAs just like overachievers.

For USC, Marshall business is also very well known. To compare which is better than which? I don’t think we will have a solid conclusion because very few people actually went to both programs. However, UCLA Anderson business school is generally regarded better than USC Marshall. Alright, don’t turn this into a silly debate. I’m just giving opinions! What is really better program really depends on how an individual view it too, remember that! USC courses are of course way more expensive than UCLA ones and this can be a big turn off for many students if they can choose a equivalently good school like UCLA.
