TAP Helps??

Hi Kevin,
I am transferring hopefully to UCLA. Do you know anyone who was transferring with you who did have TAP but was rejected from UCLA with a Bio major. I have a 3.95 GPA with a Bio major. What are my chances??? Also, how is the atmosphere is UCLA. I heard the college town is great…Thanks!

Definitely, TAP is very helpful from my observation, almost all TAP students that I knew back then are in provided that they have about 3.5+ GPA and completed all major courses. Even though I should not generalize the entire population of TAP students, I do actually believe that they have very high chance of getting in. In your case, assuming you are not missing any major course + TAP + 3.95, sit back, relax and wait for your acceptance letter. It seems like you are 99% in!

how hard is it to get classes as a transfer student?
In a macro sense, this greatly depends on the department and the courses themselves. For example, popular GEs or main required courses are usually filled up faster than electives.

In a micro sense, this depends on the professors. It is not surprising that easier professors’ courses are filled up very quickly.

In a general sense, you will be able to sign up for at least 1-2 courses that you really want except may be accounting courses (very impacted there).

do they put a limit on how many courses u take on your first quarter there? how much? thanks
Technically Yes! 21 quarter units (about 5 courses) maximum per quarter but it is generally no life if you take 4 courses or more @ UCLA in 1 quarter. Trust me, 3 courses already make you no life, not to mention 4!
For comparison purpose, I took 5 semester courses (18 units) at CC with all crazy hard courses like differential equation, biology etc and get straight A (4.0 GPA) while I suffer a lot in my first sem at UCLA with only 3 courses (3 units) all of which are the lower division courses that I was missing from CC.

Thank you Kevin 101. You are really helpful

You are very welcome! I hope you consider UCLA seriously once you are admitted. By the way, don’t just choose Cal over UCLA just for the name if you are admitted to both schools. You should consider all your factors and go with the school that passes your most expectation!

How is the business economics program at UCLA? I know it’s really selective on getting in but I’m just wondering how it squares off against USC Marshall in the Business major.
It has solid reputation, well known to the BIG 4 and many other accounting and financial firms in CA. For example, BIG 4 comes to recruite these bus econ annually especially during Fall. They have some case competitions too. The program itself is really rigorous. The professors are really tough and well known in the field too. To confirm this, I have taken 5 accounting courses and many students there are bus econ. Oh yeah, classmates in that majors generally have high GPAs just like overachievers.

For USC, Marshall business is also very well known. To compare which is better than which? I don’t think we will have a solid conclusion because very few people actually went to both programs. However, UCLA Anderson business school is generally regarded better than USC Marshall. Alright, don’t turn this into a silly debate. I’m just giving opinions! What is really better program really depends on how an individual view it too, remember that! USC courses are of course way more expensive than UCLA ones and this can be a big turn off for many students if they can choose a equivalently good school like UCLA.

By the way, did you guys also have midterms finished or having upcoming midterms?

I learn that Calstate quarter system just finished their last final for Winter and approaching Spring and at USC, they are going to take 2nd midterm and final soon.

kevin, i plan on transferring to ucla this fall. i was thinking of taking math 115a this summer. would you advise it as a first ucla class? its a six week semester… who did you take it with and what was your experience like? any professors you recommend for the class? how is the difficulty compared to other upper division math classes?

what about my questions :-(

what about my global studies questions I asked on page 1 kevin? Also, in addition to what I asked, usually in a normal range how long do transfer students get their bachelor’s degree? Is it like a regular system that it’s exactly 2 years, like if you start from september and end in june of in this case for fall 2009 transfer it would be june 2011? How many years did it take you? I ve been hearing that some people take more time than what it is said. Hope you can respond to this as well.

Thanks Kevin, for your support! I hope you are right about the 99% acceptance…i am still worried though. Also, thanks for opening up this thread…it is really helpful!

Hey Kevin,

Nice to have you as a resource. I am in kind of a predicament. I applied as a business economics major, but have decided I want to either double major in math and econ or do the math/econ major at ucla. How hard would it be to switch from econ to math/econ or to double major? I am worried about the maximum unit requirements.

very important: besides the GPA, is the community service or anything like this affect a lot if i want to transfer into econ major??? please help me out.

Kevin, where have you been??

Hi all! I’m so sorry for this late reply! I have been quite busy with school and work lately and midterm is on Wednesday so I’ll be back answering the unanswered questions. In case I didn’t inform you yet, I’m doing an engineering graduate program right now.

For the questions that I missed, I am taking more time to see if I can come up with a good answer so that is why I didn’t rush; hence missed the questions. I saw all of the questions so don’t worry!

Are you all taking midterms and exams lately, too?

thanks kevin and good luck on the tests!

hi kevin!

what can you say about the math program at ucla? how challenging is it?
are there a lot of opportunities for individual research?
is a lot of it computer based? can someone who doesn’t know a programming language comfortably fit in?
and of course,
which professor would you recommend taking classes from & why?

thanks in advance!

Kevin, do my chances of being admitted stand stronger when undergraduate admissions inquires me about having completed one year high school Chemistry? (Psychology major)

hey kevin, its all cool. Yeah I took this big bio midterm and cultural anthopology one last week. Next week I am taking business calculus and history midterms so it’s been pretty stressing but where I am at just 10 more weeks remaining. Feels like so long, hope I can get the good news next month in if UCLA would accept me. I wish everyone on this board luck, we have all made it to the final stages and I hope we can all get in! I hope you did well on the midterms whenever you have the answers please feel free to respond to the questions I had. Take care!

First of all, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

How difficult would it be to add a double major of Political Science (which is impacted) if I finish all/most of the pre-reqs prior to transferring?

Also, would it be possible to graduate within two years with a double major of two social sciences taking 3 classes a quarter?

I think beardy’s original question deserves some more exploring.

is grad school a must for people who don’t major in business econ or engineering?

in the sense that you need to go in hopes of making a modest salary and living later on
