QB Finalist from Low Income Family who applied to Cornell ED

Hi everyone! I’ll be attending college in the class of 2021, but I ran across one problem. Earlier this year, I was admitted as a QuestBridge Finalist, meaning that if I get matched with one of the many schools partnered with this program, I’d get a full ride. However, for the Common App, I applied to Cornell, a college that isn’t sponsored with QuestBridge, for ED. I’m a student from California so if I were to attend this university, I’d have to pay $67,613 annually, which is more than double the amount that my family actually makes(30k). Although it has been a dream of mine to attend this university, the tuition for me to do so proves to be too high and I’m now unsure as to what I should do if I get admitted. As of now, I’m clueless as to how much financial aid Cornell would be willing to provide for me and if there’d be a chance for me to be able to attend such a prestigious university at a reasonable cost for me and my family. Thank you for your time and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Did you complete the fafsa and Profile and submit them to Cornell when you did your ED application?

Cornell guarantees to meet the full need of all admitted students. If your family income ismreally $30,000 a year, you should get a decent need based aid awards…assuming you submitted the financial aid applications on time.

Did you run the Net Price Calculator for Cornell?

??

No, you wouldn’t. Cornell gives need based aid. Did you submit the FA forms to Cornell when you applied ED?

I don’t believe that I’ve completed the FAFSA and Profile for the application. The ED results come out tomorrow at 2 PM PST and if I do get accepted, should I fill out the FAFSA and Profile or has it past the expiring date already? Also, I have not run the net price calculator for Cornell. Before applying, I was completely unaware of the fact that Cornell was not partnered with QuestBridge and only just realized this today. Of course, this all doesn’t matter if I end up being rejected tomorrow, but on my Common App, I only mentioned that I was a QuestBridge Finalist. Would that do me any good in terms of the amount of financial aid that would be offered to me? Thank you!
Edit: I thought that Cornell was partnered with QB and from that, decided not to fill out a FAFSA, or not that I’m aware of.

You are a Questbridge finalist and didn’t know till today that Cornell wasn’t a partner school? How is that even possible? It is up to you to do your research on schools you are applying to. smh

You will need to fill out the FAFSA and Profile and it’s not too late. You will need to fill them out every year if you want aid.

If you find out tomorrow that you have been accepted to Cornell, submit the FAFSA and Profile as soon as possible so that you can get a financial aid award. Also, run Cornell’s Net Price Calculator so that you can get a rough idea now of how much aid you will receive from Cornell.

Right now you have nothing; you have not been matched through questbridge. It seems like you applied to your questbridge schools through RD. You applied ED to Cornell, but you did not apply for financial aid.

Even if you are matched with a Questbridge school, you still need to apply for financial aid!!! If you haven’t applied for aid, you will not get your full ride through Questbridge

You did not do your due diligence now did you read basic instructions.

Go back to the Cornell website and the Questbridge website and all of the schools that you applied to through Questbridge and file all of your financial aid forms now!!!

If you are accepted ED and get enough aid to attend where it is affordable to your family, then you must withdraw your Questbridge applications. If the Cornell package is not affordable, then you will turn down the acceptance without knowing if it was your best package.

Either set of schoolswill meet 100% demonstrated need. You will still have to get your student contribution through summer earnings.

There may be federal loans in your aid package unless you applied to schools that have no-loan policies.

If you are a Questbridge finalist, did you rank colleges through the College Match?

Then how were you able to apply ED to Cornell?

Did your guidance counselor sign off on this?

Or am I misunderstanding the rules in the link above?

I agree with others that you need to fill out your FAFSA and CSS profile asap.

For ED, you needed to get this done by now…like in November.

My suggestion is that you get the forms done TODAY. You will be using 2015 tax return data so it should be able to be done.

But you might want to contact Cornell and ask them the consequences of NOT doing the financial application forms…which you will have to do ANYWAY…for your other schools.

ED decisions and aid will be coming out very soon. You missed the fonnacial, aid application deadline. Only Cornell can tell you what that means.

Personally, I think you made a HUGE mistake by applying ED…and it was compounded by not doing the financial, aid application forms. You KNOW you need aid to attend school. I’m not sure how you let this happen.

^^^^ I think this situation just shows the application process is a steep learning curve for some applicants. This might be a first generation student without any real guidance.

OP, get both the FAFSA and CSS Profile done today, and then call each school’s financial aid office to let them know it’s there and see if they need anything else to determine your package. That’s all you can do now. Good luck!

On December 1 they find out if they have been matched with a school. Because Op stated that s/he is a finalist, s/he was not matched. All of his/her apps are RD

“If you are accepted ED and get enough aid to attend where it is affordable to your family, then you must withdraw your Questbridge applications.”

QuestBridge Match is already over.

Would it be a good idea to move that Cornell application to RD?

I know that. If family feels that Cornell has supplied sufficient aid, Op must withdraw the RD applications they applied through Questbridge. If one is not match Questbridge pays the RD application fees.

Ivy League schools match other financial aid packages. You can negotiate 100%. (that’s what I did.)

I wish it always worked like that. That works among peer schools but not necessarily ANY school’s package that you bring to an Ivy.

You do know that QB matches were announced Dec. 1st?

Cornell meets full need without loans for a 30k family income. The FA package from Cornell will be just as favorable as QB.

Early submission of the FAFSA and CSS profile allows Cornell to provide a FA package with the ED acceptance. The forms can still be filed. Relax. Cornell is not going to run out of money.

It is concerning that you aren’t aware that FA exists. If you really believed that you would be full pay at Cornell why did you apply? Why are you suddenly aware of the price?

Don’t you have a QB mentor or someone helping you navigate the application process? Isn’t that one of the benefits of being a QB finalist? If not, your guidance counselor should be able to assist you.

There is nothing to match in the ED round.

Unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean… sure there is. Plenty of kids I know already matched to schools through QB.
