Can anyone explain to me why the answer isn't B? I thought you can't say "and _" then a "or _" like "I like cheese, donuts, and pizza or soda". Isn't that a grammatical error?

your example isn’t what they did
what they did is "I like cheese, donuts and pizza, or soda.
the donuts and pizza are not separated by a comma and therefore serve as one term.

Even if you don’t use a comma, doesn’t the “and” make the “or” cancel out?

no, you are allowed to include the “and” as long as it doesn’t indicate the end of the list (i.e as long as it doesn’t have the comma before it)

I think an important thing you needed to know was that “hooks and eyes” acts as one object.
