Quality of Life as an Engineer

I am planning on applying to Lehigh's engineering program and was wondering what the life of engineering students is like. I've heard the work hard play hard attitude thats on campus, but im wondering more about the work hard part.

What is the workload like? how much time to engineers spend studying and doing work? How many nights a week do engineers go to parties? any other info i may have forgotten would be nice to know as well. thanks!

My son is an engineering major and he studies ALOT! Sun-Thurs for the most part. The key is to get to know others in your major so that you studying can be collaborative. You can still have tons of fun, no doubt, but engineering is different than being a Sociology major, lets face it!.

There is homework, in Calc and programming mostly, two midterms and one final in most classes. The bulk of the work is studying for exams.

My son has a 4.0, so if you want a 4.0 in Engineering you make a decision to focus on school work at least 5 days a week.

I am in IBE, but my 1st semester was the standard schedule (more or less) for engineering students coming in with the AP credits I had.

My schedule was:
Intro to Chem
Engineering Computations (Intro to C++, Excel, MatLab)
Calc 2
Composition 1

I got through the semester with a 3.26.

I studied when I needed to: about 3 days before my first exam, I put in about 2 hours a day for the exams that I knew were going to wreck me. All of my exams were sequential (Tues Wed Thurs), so after the first exam I spent several hours studying for the next exam. I did all of my homework, perhaps not as well as I should have, but I did it all and got decent grades on them. I studied for my 4 o’clocks, same kind of schedule for the finals. In my opinion I will need to work harder next semester.

Honestly the workload isn’t terrible first semester. I certainly handled it and still had plenty of free time to do things I enjoy (party, spend time with friends, video games, hit the gym, etc.). I will absolutely tell you my quality of life is better at Lehigh than it was in High School.
