I applied to UT-Austin as a back-up to other universities, and last week I found out I was accepted into the Liberal Arts College and the major program I wanted (Asian Cultures and Languages). I have heard from a few people that the Japanese part of the program is highly respected, but I wanted to know more from other people. Does anyone know the quality of the Japanese program, or whether students or graduates have liked the program (the way it's taught)? Also if anyone has information about the study abroad Japan, I would like to know about it.

Thanks in advance!

I minored in Japanese at UT, and I can say that it is a very good program. One of the strong points of the program is its faculty. The instructors are great, and there are a variety of courses you can take, from intro-japanese to advanced business japanese. UT has a study exchange program with Sophia and Obirin universities...so if you are looking to do a year or semester abroad, opportunities are there for you. Also, many graduates from the program go onto to work in Japan with the JET program, which is what I'm doing right now. All in all, UT's Japanese program is great. I'd recommend you contact the advisor for asian studies.
