Quality of work experience

Hey all, I posted a few days ago about my undergrad situation, but I have another question regarding future work experience in preparation for mba's.

So, back home in Southern California, my parents own a small corporation which consists of multiple businesses such as restaurants, legal paperwork services, furniture/mattress stores, a small stock portfolio invested in tech and food companies, as well as a collection of small commercial real estate in that county.

My question here is that will it beneficial for me and mba schools if I get heavily involved in the family business? (Think getting experience with legal contracts/paperwork and also management in over 30+ employees of different skillsets). Or will branching off and getting a job at a well-known company and excelling there be the better way to go?

As far as academics go, I see myself graduating with a 3.4-3.6 in business, lots of club and volunteer involvement, and experience in managing small personal side projects with college friends(Think mobile applications development).

Thanks everyone!

edit*
I am not trying to get into a top 10 MBA school by any means! I want to stay in California(Southern area if possible). Ideally, my target schools are USC, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, UCLA, and UCI.

bump plz? Thanks

Hm, I’d say that you should go branch off into a company separate from your parents’. I’m sure both would help you gain excellent experience, but going away from your family business would be the ideal way to also gain a sense of independence. Then again, what do I know?

It depends. I think that it COULD be beneficial if you demonstrate real leadership skills, not a hollow title of Vice President but play ‘Draw Something’ on your iPhone all day. Develop a new marketing campaign. Do hiring and conduct trainings. Fire people. Make tough decision. If you can do this successfully, then it could be beneficial, sure.

I’d also head over to [PoetsandQuants.com and the forums at The Gmat Club](http://www.poetsandquants.com) for some more advice there from people who are on business school admission committees.

Best of luck with your future endeavors.
