Quarter System

Personally I think the quarter system is great; I know that about 25 to 30% Universities/Colleges run on the quarter system. I am having a hard time finding this information, I was wondering if there was some sort of website/thread that I cannot find or there simply is no list for this. Could you either list website's/threads or colleges with a quarter system? :)
I have so far:
U.C's (except Merced and some other one that I cannot remember)
University of Chicago
Stanford University
Northeastern University
Dartmouth

Oodles of Thanks!

the other UC that doesnt run on quarters is UC Berkeley.

Why is the quarter system great? I'm unfamiliar with it...does it just offer the possibility of taking more classes?

It's great for some people. It really depends on what you like. Basically, the school year is divided into four quarters, and you have different classes every quarter. The "pro" is that you can take many classes in a variety of interests. The "con" is that there are frequently midterms and finals. This is, of course, relative to the semester system. I'm sure there are more subtleties but these two seem to be the main differences.

Northeastern switched to a semester system a couple of years ago. The change has substantially improved academics because the professors now have more time for simulations/group projects, and can explore the material in more depth. The students also have more time for reflection which is extremely valuable in terms of digesting the material. IMO, semesters are far superior to quarters (I have experienced both). More info:

I wouldn't necessarily look to pick a college based on whether it has a quarter system or not.

Northwestern.

Is a great place to be.

“I wouldn't necessarily look to pick a college based on whether it has a quarter system or not.”

Why not? The academic calendar can and often does have a profound impact on a person’s education. There are many differences between the class systems. Of course there are other factors at which a student should look before picking a college, but this is not something to take lightly: the quarter system is not for the faint of heart!

It seems very low on the totem pole to me compared to more important concerns. I would maybe be interested in a school and then see if it had a quarter system as opposed to wanting to know what all the quarter system schools are up front.

I went to a college with a quarter system and then transferred into one without it. Like others have said, there are pros and cons, but I prefer the traditional semester system as long as you can also take summer courses. The reason is that in the quarter sytem my schedule was totally out of sync with all my friends from other colleges.
