Hello
I am an international student. My HS through 11 grade GPA was 3.7 on a scale of 4. I wanted to know how many international students get accepted in a premedical program in USA every year?
Thanks
There is no “Premedical programs” unless you are looking for a BS/MD program? Premed is an intention, not a major. You can major in anything you want as long as you take the required courses needed to apply to Medical school. @WayOutWestMom. a frequent poster can give you an idea of the # of International applicants that matriculate into Medical school each year. Most are Canadian applicants.
As Gumbymom said, there is no such thing as a “pre-medical program” in the US. In the US, medicine is a post-graduate degree that requires the completion of an baccalaureate degree in any subject as well as completing a list of pre-requisite science & non-science courses, plus taking a national, standardized medical school admissions test (MCAT).
It’s extraordinarily difficult for an international student to attend a US med school. There are 2 reasons:
- most US medical schools do not accept international students
- you must be able to pay for your medical education in full and prove this by depositing $100,000 - $500,000 into a escrow account in a US bank before you can begin US med school. Scholarships for international med students basically do not exist. You cannot borrow money to pay for med school without a fully qualified US citizen or permanent resident to co-sign loans for you.
AMCAS (MD schools) and AACOMAS (DO schools) track admission by residency status. In 2104, only 36 non-Canadian internationals were accepted into all US osteopathic med school combined. in 2015, fewer than 200 internationals (Canadian & non-Canadian) were accepted into all allopathic med schools combined. It’s estimated that of those 200, more than 85-90% are Canadians. (Canadians are strongly favored in med school admission over other international applicants because more schools–particularly those adjacent to the Canadian border-- will consider Canadians for admission and the Canadian government/ Canadian banks readily provide loans for Canadian citizens to attend med school in the US.)
