Im going on to my senior year of high school this coming fall. My gpa is a 4.1, yet I hardly have any EC whatsoever. Im very devoted to the science, biological not so much though, and will be taking ap chem and ap physics next year. MIT has shown to be a top science research university, but with my lack of EC my question is: would I have a better chance of getting into UC Berkely than MIT?

I would think that statistically speaking, anybody has a better chance of getting into UC Berkeley than MIT, regardless of your EC portfolio.

Ok, thanks.

So going to a pruly scientific univerisity, UC Berkeley would be my best bet?

An explanation of Berkeley’s admissions criteria is found here: [University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/general_info/uc_reviews/freshman_app.html). But even here, notice the request for some evidence of engagement in activities/projects:
“Special talents, achievements and awards in a particular field, such as visual and performing arts, communication or athletic endeavors; special skills, such as demonstrated written and oral proficiency in other languages; special interests, such as intensive study and exploration of other cultures; experiences that demonstrate unusual promise for leadership, such as significant community service or significant participation in student government; or other significant experiences or achievements that demonstrate the student’s promise for contributing to the intellectual vitality of a campus.”

You should apply to a range of schools, from MIT to Berkeley to match and safety schools. But in the meantime, just for your own personal development, why not spend some time this summer doing something interesting? Give back to your community by volunteering your time, or work on some other project. Take a sailing lesson; learn how to bake macaroons and teach someone else the recipe; befriend a resident of a convalescent hospital; find a job and go to work; write a comic book; create a music video; learn a language; hike up a mountain; learn to ice-skate backwards; build a remote-controlled model helicopter; read every single one of Isaac Asimov’s books. Stretch yourself. :-)

Ah all very interesting choices. : ) I think i might end up volunterring for the local summer school program to red to childern.
