Lets say you are matched, but you are not home when QB calls, what then? I was wondering because I’ll be going to an information session for Syracuse University. I HAVE TO go because it is part of program that I am in. I won’t be home till around 6:30-6:40ish EST. Do you think they will call me (IF I am matched) at a later time? Also, I don’t have a cell phone, so, QB will only be able to contact my house. Should I tell QB?

Swagga, you will get an email as well as a call if you are matched.

So, I just did the MIT FA Calculator and am confused. Even though we have less than 60,000 income the cost is 10,000. I played with the amount of home equity we have and it does not change the numbers at all even if we show no equity so that is not it. No, savings, no trust funds for sure!! I thought with less than 60,000 income we wuold be zero efc at MIT.

My EFC on the calculator is $2,000 and my income is ~35K. Remember that this calculator is just an estimate and the school cannot officially commit to giving you a $0 EFC.

Also note that the 60K cutoff is for nuclear families with typical assets so the EFC may fluctuate depending on number of people in your household and your assets. So a family of 2 with a $60K income would not have a $0 EFC while a family of 9 with a 100K income might

scoutsmom, this confused me: “Re Yale: we can verify that 65K is the 0 EFC cutoff for Yale, with “typical” assets (no trust funds in our Profile!). We’re a family of two.”

So are you saying that the you’re under that $65k, but your ds still wasn’t matched with a $0 EFC – and then admitted later?

@Youdontsay, yes, that’s exactly what happened. In fact, twice, because my son was not matched but admitted during regular decision to 2 of the schools he ranked. So there’s no “formula” to being matched and no reason to despair if you’re not matched.

This is why the federal government should never require colleges, especially colleges who use the CSS Profile, to post their net price calculator online. Financial aid for the most part is holistic. There are actually financial aid officers who thoroughly look at your finances and holistically consider any of your expenses, including medical expenses (and maybe the fact that your family lacks health insurance), money sent overseas to relatives (especially in immigrant families), and maybe (for QB scholars, usually small) amounts of money paid for private school for siblings, etc. Plus, there are other unique situations that might decrease income that CANNOT be explained in a net price calculator.

Now that I am thinking about it. I still might not have a $0 EFC, but some people who thought they didn’t have a $0 EFC might actually have one at certain schools.

Ds2 didn’t do the match round so I’m not holding my breath.

To offer more encouragement, I’ll repeat ds1’s story … He went nonbinding with ND and didn’t get matched. Soon after, he got notification that ND had moved him to the EA round and accepted him! No idea why they didn’t match him despite obviously wanting him, but, hey, proves that there’s more than one way to skin a cat! Don’t despair, everyone. It will work out. Schools will only take so many QB kids, but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost.

Someone mentioned MIT: I’m pretty sure you can’t even be matched to MIT unless you make <23K.

Very little time left, guys!

@Lesley, thanks for crushing my dreams! :-)

Hey, at least it’ll let you know that maybe they only didn’t match you because of your income… o.O You have a chance in EA afterwards anyway.

Source on that, Lesley?

T-36 hours!

Does anyone know whether being a QB finalist helps or hurts you for RD? Is it better to use the QB regular decision option, or to just submit the application for each school seperately? Because most schools are “need-blind” and don’t know whether you have a high or low income, but sending applications through QB releases that information to a certain extent.

@humdumdum I actually may be slightly wrong in the exact number. But I DO know that the Questbridge website specifically says in the MIT section that you MUST qualify for the full Pell Grant… I just thought you had to have an EFC of 0 to get the full Pell Grant, but I’m actually not even sure what the guideline is anymore. Cutoff for 0 EFC IS, however, 23K. P.S. Others reading this: this is the number for FAFSA, not most of the universities we’re all probably applying to. Private schools like the ivy can adjust this number whichever way they want. (like Yale’s cutoff is ~65K… Dartmouth’s ~75K, etc.)

@treestump Helps! I can’t believe you would think it hurts! Haha. Roughly 50% of all Questbridge finalists are accepted by at least one Questbridge partner. (and remember, that’s just QB partners… We’re missing the results of Harvard, Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Harvey Mudd, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, etc.)

P.S. Guysssssssss, 23-33 hours until we know. :OOO

@treestump: The trick is knowing which colleges really are ‘need blind’. Some claim to be and really are not, so research every school individually. I’ve heard, for example, that Boston University rejects based upon income. I’ve heard the same of Georgetown and NYU. (not sure this is true, but there is plenty of information available online and on CC) If a school has a huge endowment, then chances are it will be need blind, and QB would not hurt you.

Oh gosh. Roughly 24 hours until we know our fates! I don’t even know if I’ll be able to sleep tonight because I’m so anxious. I keep telling myself there’s always RD, and I hope everyone else doesn’t beat themselves up on the results tomorrow if things don’t turn out well.

hey guys, so I’m a finalist for QB and I’m applying regular decision. I’m a little confused with some common app stuff…some schools require the common app and don’t accept the questbridge app (such as USC). Will that school still know that I’m a Questbridge finalist?
I already submitted my common app to USC but nothing on the common app or supplement indicated that I was a finalist for QB. Would it be a good idea to e-mail the admissions department and let them know?
Also, where did you guys list QB finalist at on your common app? I’m going to add it to honors, but would it also be a good idea to list it under the additional information section? It would only be like, one sentence, so I wasn’t sure if that would look dumb.
Please help!!! Thanks (:

Ppl who ranked brown! Did u guys get an email from brown? Its about their live chat and it says tey are discussing their application process… Is this a bad sign:(

^ I got that e-mail too, but I didn’t rank Brown.
