It’s not that hard to switch majors within your college. Poli Sci is an “impacted major” yet everyone switched during CalSO.

For certain majors, not everyone completes the major pre-reqs at CC meaning you wont be able to declare unless you do meet them. However, for certain cases, you are allowed to declare but you are required to complete that requirement. So for instance, Poli Sci - no one can do PS 3 at their community college, so they are required to complete it at Cal. However, PS 5 (IR), for some cc’s, they don’t transfer over. If it doesnt transfer over, you’ll have to complete it at Cal before you can declare. So even if you are admitted as a “Political Science” Major, you aren’t really a PS major until you declare either at CalSO or until you meet the requirements down the road.

Honestly, the best way to find the answer to your question if you really don’t want to put your trust on people from CC - find out yourself. Call the department at Cal. Read the requirements yourself. Ask your counselors. Or just wait the process out.

yeah, “capped” majors such as psych hardly let ppl switch over, it is near impossible. Doubling/minoring is different, but you will only be allowed to if you finish the necessary pre-reqs for psychology. Well atleast for doubling, im not sure sure about minoring, I can ask my UCB TAP advisor about it, but she’s on vacation somewhere right now, i can get back to you on it, just remind me by PM.

CalBearGuy that would be great if you could ask your advisor! I do intend to finish the pre-requisites for psychology if I were to be admitted to Cal as a philosophy major. My only question is this: My CC doesn’t articulate any philosophy classes to Cal, so in theory I would have to finish those pre-reqs for phil over fall 2010. However, what if I finished the psych and phil requirements by the end of fall 2010? Could I then swap into Psych? Or can I possibly double major?

Chibi_loopi, so that means I wouldn’t be a Phil major, right? Since my phil requirements will not be completed at my CC I’m not actually a phil major. Thus, would I not be able to just complete the psych pre-reqs and enter spring 2011 as a Psych major?

Like I mentioned earlier, the goal is for me to take as much Psych as I can since I do want to be a psychiatrist. I’m willing to swap/double/or minor in Psych. I’m just trying to determine what is the most logical and realistic way to handle this.

I think I will ask my counselors about this…though they are too often inadequate. I’ll do some research on this.

CalBearGuy: If you could ask your advisor about this, though, that would be awesome.

I’m 80% sure that’s the case. I remember they explained this at CalSO about how you need to still declare. My roommate and I had different situations though. I was able to declar at calso because the only course that didn’t articulate was a course I can only take at cc. He, being a media studies major, was allowed to declare half-way through the semester. In his case, they took a little longer to evaluate his articulation.

It is, though, a little risky to apply for a major that you did with no courses articulated over. I don’t believe in this whole back-door thing. But if I’m correct/ you’re right. You can do the psych pre-reqs and declare later. I would double check by calling the UC Berkeley Transer Student Program. They ran CalSO so they are best in answering your question.
