Would I be more likely to be accepted if I mention that I am gay?

bump im serious guys

Nobody on the admissions committee really cares if an applicant is gay or not. UChicago is a very accepting atmosphere for gays/lesbians, but that doesn’t give them a leg up in admissions. Academic potential comes first at UChicago, always.

Not on its own, but there could be a slew of good essay topics you can do (depending on your personal experiences, of course).

If I were you, I would mention it, but be careful. It will definitely boost your chances, as colleges, especially Ivies and traditionally liberal schools, love to have that diversity of experience and background. However, you don’t want to be too blatant about it. A gay friend of mine, who was certainly smart, mentioned that he was gay in his application by naming the similarities between himself and someone he met who was also openly gay and loved biology, and then also mentioning that this man had AIDS and that he realized he could end up this way and didn’t want to. So it was done tactfully and wasn’t the entire point of what he was trying to say. Don’t listen to people who say it won’t help, just don’t wear it as a crown.
