I am a junior in NY State high school. Next year, I will be a senior taking relatively rigorous courses. (AP English Lit, AP Microeconomics, AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, Multivariable Calculus). My GC told me, however, that I only took two years of language in high school, and despite me having already taken the regents for it (Chinese), I have to take a third year in order to receive the “Advanced Regents Diploma.” If I take Chinese or another language, I will have no room to fit in AP Music Theory, which is what I am hoping will fulfill my music requirement. Thus, I will have to do concert band or orchestra, which will leave me no frees or lunch in my schedule. All I want to know is how important the “Advanced Regents Diploma” is, and if it will significantly worsen the college admissions process for me if I do not have one. I have 5 other AP classes listed on my record and 3 extracurriculars, if it helps with any judgment made on this topic. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your reply.
Plus, my lowest Regents grade is an 88 in Chinese. Everything else is 90+. Will colleges look at this individually?
Nobody outside of the state of NY gets an advanced Regents diploma so most schools, other than SUNY’s, don’t care. I seriously doubt that not having this designation on your diploma will hurt your admissions chances in any way.
Good luck.
Thanks, tech. Does anyone know how universities inside of NY would respond to this?
