Hello, forum ppl

Since my school does not provide some AP courses that I want to study, I'm planning to study individually and take the tests. My question is, "Can I include the AP courses I'm going to take independently in my GPA?".

I guess I can't... can I?

No, from what I know you won’t be able to factor your AP scores into your GPA. However, you should talk to your principal/academic advisor about this in case they’re willing to make an exception. There is no harm in asking. You will obviously be able to report the scores you get to colleges either way, so admissions officers will know that you independently studied for the AP tests that you didn’t take classes for. Hope this helps!

In general, most HS transcripts only calculate GPA for courses taken at the HS. A few HS may calculate GPA with outside courses if they are taken in conjunction with a known program, but almost no HS that I know of will accept a random outside grade into the HS GPA.

In the end, it makes little difference, each college will break down and recalculate GPA as they see fit, whether from just certain core HS courses or from every course ever taken from every source - it’s really up to them. Just do the best you can in any course you ever take, and let the chips fall where they may. It’s really too complicated to worry about it more than that…
