Are Online courses factored into GPA???

Do colleges factor in accredited courses taken outside of high school when calculating GPA? For example, I was accepted into a prestigious online school where I can take a couple of courses every year during my junior and senior year, but they are not part of my public school's curriculum. However, I am able to send a separate transcript to the universities of my choice - because, again, it is an accredited institution.

Just to clarify, these are NOT college courses; they are very challenging STEM-related courses that I take online WITHOUT earning college credit.

Also, I am not dual enrolled, meaning I do not have an empty period in my school schedule to take these courses. I complete them on my free time outside of class after school.

I would very much appreciate if I can get more specific feedback regarding schools such as MIT, Caltech, or Carnegie Mellon.

Thank you!

The web site for the classes you are taking should give you preliminary answers. If they say that they are an accredited school then the next step is to contact the admissions departments of the colleges you’re interested in and ask them.

At my D’s high school, online courses from a few approved sources (i.e. Virtual High School) are noted directly on the highschool transcript and factored into GPA. She was told that if she chose courses from schools her HS didn’t have a relationship with, she would be responsible to obtaining the transcripts from those schools and getting them sent separately to colleges.

I’d recommend you call the colleges in question. That would be the very best way to make sure you’re not wasting time, money, and energy.
