Hi to all!

College of Santa Fe has DEFINITELY peaked my interest as far as musical theater is concerned. It’s in new mexico, supposedly gorgeous, the program seems rigorous and conservatory-like, inexpensive college…But, then comes the question. How hard is it to get in? Do you have to be at the level of nyu, because on the “big list” of musical theater colleges on geocities, it doesn’t list it under ‘very selective.’ but, the curriculum suggests otherwise. hm.

also, how is the program there? any current MT majors feel free to comment! I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Jeremy, the curriculum and the program at a college can be excellent even if the college is not as difficult to get into than another. It is definitely "easier" both academically and artistically to get into the BFA in MT program at Santa Fe than your example of NYU. That doesn't mean it is not demanding or not a good program. In fact, if it meets your college criteria, it could be a good BFA to put on the list to balance out the "chancier" schools. There are not many posters on CC who attend this program. There was one parent in the past who had a D going to Santa Fe but I am not sure that parent still posts. Keep exploring the school, as well as others, to see how it matches up with your personal college criteria/preferences. Remember, "easier" schools to get into doesn't necessarily equate with not as good of a quality of a school. You just need the school to fit what you are looking for. Further, you need a well balanced list of odds on your college list and so you can't have all "reaches" academically or artistically. Good luck to you.

Thank you soozievt for responding and so soon! Do you happen to know how many students get accepted per year or howmany students total arein the school?

I don't have those stats for Santa Fe, I don't think. But do a search of threads on Santa Fe to see if any comments in that regard have come up. Also, email/call schools directly to find out such information. The acceptance rate at the college itself is quite high: 73%.

Also, while acceptance rate INTO the BFA program is a helpful piece of information, you have to realize that it is also helpful to weigh in the level of the artistic pool of applicants. That pool at College of Santa Fe will have talented students in it, no question. But it is not the same exact pool at say, CCM. There is overlap, of course, as students hopefully build balanced college lists. But some students who apply to programs like CCM, for example, are not always also applying to programs like CSF. As well, if an applicant is admitted to both CSF and CMU, for example, many (not necessarily all) will likely opt to enroll at CMU, thus freeing up spots at CSF for those who are not admitted to schools like CMU, Tisch, UMich, CCM (just examples). So, look beyond admit rate into the program and think roughly of the artistic selectivity of the applicant pool at each school as well. Two schools could have an admit rate of 9% but one of the schools might still be much harder to get into artistically, than the other, for instance.

Artsymom's daughter attends this program and you could try to PM or email her as I don't know if she is still reading CC.
