Question about Brown, Michigan, Northwestern, and NYU combined degree programs

I have heard that Brown is probably the best of the Universities that offer the bs/md program. However, if I'm not mistaken, NYU, Northwestern, and especially Michigan all have medical schools that rank higher than Brown's. So how is it that Brown's combined program is so much better?

Brown- 43rd
NYU- 30th
Northwestern- 20th
Michigan- 7th!
(from US News)

PS, I know that their rankings are somewhat unreliable, etc., etc. so I dont need a whole lecture on that. Knowing that, these are very wide gaps in the ranking, suggesting that they can't be too much off.

NYU doesn't have a BS/MD program anymore

Michigan's Interfex program was done away with a few years ago. As mikespan32 stated, NYU doens't have one. And from what I have heard, Northwestern's HPME program is in fact better than Brown's PLME.

i think perhaps ppl regard brown's undergrad better since it is an ivy... other than that, i think northwestern's med school is better and it is in the middle of downtown Chicago which is a really great location

Thanx, one more question then. I know the stats and chances for gettin into Brown's PLME, 103/1400, anyone know the stats for NW's HPME?

You should check out the combined med program board; there are tons of posts there. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=476
HPME's average SAT I and class rank is 1535 and top 1% while PLME's is 1430 and top 2%, respectively.

In Brown's defense, their medical school is comprised of only PLME kids only a select few through a special Dartmouth/Brown program, perhaps this is a contributing reason for the med school's low ranking. Also Brown's matchlist (a far more important indicator of med school quality than USNews Ranking is good/great)

While I respect your opinion bharath2007, on the more offensive side against Brown- I don't think Brown's medical school which is broken up into small units throughout Rhode Island has the same clinical exposure that a college such as Northwestern's medical school does right in the heart of Chicago.

Sam Lee where did u see those stats exactly

I've heard that Brown, despite the relatively prestigious undergrad, is one of the weaker combined med programs, as Brown med school (as buckwald mentioned) isn't "as good" (however you define quality in a med school) as some of the others offering med programs.

where do u get the matchlist of a med schoo;?

You have to contact the school directly, you can find the lists for a few schools floating around.
buckwald- In Brown's offense it is also probably one of the most expensive BA/MD programs to attend also.

"In Brown's offense it is also probably one of the most expensive BA/MD programs to attend also."

It's worth it :p

you attend brown's plme?

if so what are your thoughts on it?

No, I don't know much about it actually lol

I am just Brown '09 :p

mistappa,

I saw the PLME's stats on their website. buckwald posted the HPME's stats on HPME's thread; buckwald is a HPME applicant and his dad works at NU's med school and is on admission committee or something.
