Question about Certificates

Hey everyone.
On the part of the Pton supplement that asks you to identify a possible major and a possible certificate, it has this to say:
"In addition to majoring in one of the departments listed above, many students also choose to complete one or more certificate programs. In some cases they constitute a focus within a particular department (e.g., the creative writing track in English); in other cases they are interdisciplinary (e.g., environmental studies)."

Does this mean that the certificate that I choose must have at least SOMETHING to do with my proposed major? As in interdisciplinary with regard to my major and something else?

I am a potential philosophy major, and that's the only choice that I put under the 'programs of study' part - would it make sense/be acceptable for me to put Hellenic Studies under the certificate part?

Thanks!

Certificates don’t have to have anything to do with your major. I’m a chem major pursuing linguistics. It is however true that certificate requirements are much easier to fulfill (due to prerequisites and cross-listing courses) when they are related to your department. And also people tend to do related majors and certificates because peoples’ interests cluster in that manner.

Just put whatever you’re interested in.

Like what newest just said, your certificates do not have to have anything in common with your major. Having said that, if they do, you’ll have classes that count both towards your major and certificate at the same time which is neat.

FYI- I’m Econ with a finance cert. I only have to take a few extra classes to qualify for the cert since everything else I take anyhow for econ.
