Hello all! I am applying to the University of Virginia and was wondering whether the class rank is more important from after Junior year (which we find out in the Fall) or after the first semester? Or do they evaluate both?

Thanks!

It would be my guess that your rank for admissions purposes would be considered after Junior year. Is your school really recalculating rank again after first semester? That seems unfair considering a persons work should be considered after the whole course not just one semester. However all the schools you apply to will look at your mid term grades just to make sure they are consistent with past performance especially considering that most students take their most difficult courses in their senior year.

Good Luck!

If your school calculates rank, they will do so after your junior year.

Very few recalculate rank after the first semester, but we will get an updated transcript and GPA with the mid-year report.

Dean J, does not having a class rank hurt? I did not list my class rank because it is unofficial (I know it because one of my teachers showed me). I know class rank plays a large role in admissions so it seems like a school not ranking can only hurt a student (well if they would be ranked highly that is).

My school recalculates rank after each market period. We use a “cut credit” system, so the credit weight of a grade in a current class is proportional to how long you’ve had the class.

I’ve never heard of rankings like that nate.

For example, if I got a 90% in AP calc first marking period (of four), in calculating my new GPA and rank, that 90% would have 1/5 the impact as if I had a 90% at year’s end.

Dean J,
My school is one of the few that does recalculate class rank after the first semester and I was always under the impression that the only class rank from which UVa makes admissions is the most recent one. Therefore, I thought that class rank after Junior Year is irrelevant and that the only one that matters is ours after the first semester. Was I mistaken?

How much will it affect my admissions to UVA if my school does not weight class rank or grades? For example: I am about 58 out of 680 + students in my class, but I have always taken honors classes and I am in 3 APs. The salutatorian of my class takes no high level courses, and never has.
