Hey guys, I had a question about class rank and how admissions people view the ranks. I was at class rank 50/293 after junior year, and after my first semester of senior year, I became class rank 1/293 when I reached my 4.0. I was just wondering, how do you think the admissions counselors would view the class rank...? I mean, yes, I am rank 1, but I went from a 3.98 to a 4.___ GPA, which jumped me from rank 50 to rank 1. The collegeboard website shows that UVA's admissions policies looks at class rank a lot, so it worries me. Any opinions? I live in Roanoke, VA, so I don't know if location would play a role as well, but yeah.

UVa does consider class rank. I would make sure your guidance counselor points out your standing on not only your official transcript but on the mid-year report too. You might also want to email admissions and let them know your change in GPA as well as your current rank. Congratulations! This is the type of change they want to know about. If your counselor already sent in your mid-year report and it is not reflected on it, then they need to send in an email to admissions. Hope this helps!

It’s going to be sent and all, but I am actually referring to the actual huge jump from 50 to 1. Will they still consider the 50/293, or do they just look at the new rank of 1/293 once the midyear report gets in?

I’m just confused as to how you jumped that high after one semester. o_O

^agreed, what is the ranking policy of your school?

Wof – Since you are in Roanoke (IS), it is likely UVa adcoms are well versed with your school, it’s GPA ranges and its ranking policies. Just to venture a guess, though, are all students at your school with a 4.0 weighted ranked #1? If so, UVa will likely know of your new #1 ranking when your counselor submits your mid-year report with your new GPA. Wouldn’t hurt to have your GC remind them, though.

Does your school subscribe to Naviance or otherwise keep track of the number of admits to UVa from your school? You might want to check with your GC about that, to help you with perspective on what your new ranking might mean for your chances at UVa.

wofbharatj attends a school where everyone with a 4.0 gets #1 status. There are a few of these schools out there. There are times when as much as 15% of the class is ranked in the first position.

All schools submit a profile that explains grading scale, GPA/average methodology (weighting, courses included in GPA, etc), ranking methodology, curricular options, restrictions, and more. We use the profile to interpret the information on the transcript.

If you’re curious, you can probably find your school’s profile online or at the guidance office.

Yet another reason why you shouldn’t be intimidated by other students posting their stats on this website. People rarely volunteer the methodology used to get their GPAs and rankings.

^^Thank you for the information about the school profile. I am wondering what is meant by restrictions? At many high schools, certain AP courses are only offered if there is enough interest. If enough interest is found then the course may only be offered for one section creating conflicts in a students schedule when their courseload includes several classes offered in the same time block. In essence, the school profile may list many rigorous AP courses that the school offers, but in reality a student can run up against scheduling conflicts that prevent them from pursuing the classes they want. Should a student address this in their application or does the school address it in the profile. I am unaware if my child’s school makes their profile public…probably not.

Ah okay, I see now.

Restrictions = school policies like limited students to 2 upper level courses per year or upper level classes only offered to juniors and seniors, etc.

We expect students or counselors to tell us about a scheduling conflict that might have affected a specific student’s schedule.

Just ask your guidance or college counselor for a profile. I have never known a school not to give one to a parent or student that has made this request. Usually, you have to go in to their office to obtain the document.

Thank you Dean J and woosah.

Also, most all private schools’ profiles for the most recent graduating class can be found on their websites.

Yes, all 4.0 UW or W receives valedictorian status in my school. I also had a problem with scheduling actually, but I doubt my counselor wrote that in her reports. I was unable to take Spanish 4 in junior year, as well as AP Chemistry… I was also unable to take Spanish 4 over the summer in order to continue my Spanish classes. A lot of things were messed up with my application to be honest (Including moving from Albemarle High School in Charlottesville to my new school), I need to go to my counselor tomorrow and ask her if any of these were mentioned in my app.

As for Naviance, I don’t think our school posts information in it, sadly. I really want to know how this high school fares in regards to UVA and other in-state institutions.

I emailed the UVA admissions email about the class rank change, but I forgot to mention the junior year classes, I probably should have. I’ll ask my counselor first.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I am a Dean in the Office of Admission. Do you still have a question?

Nope, I think I’m good! May I send you a private message with my name and D.O.B and extra information that can be added to my application, or should I just send it via email?

Please send it by email. It’s much faster. I don’t do any of the filing. :)

Hi my school gave me my transcript and it said Rank: 02/02/2011.
But my GPA and Rank didn’t change at all. And supposedly I’m supposed to get extra points for taking AP and Honors classes. Also my senior grades were really high and I thought my rank will change. But everything is still the same. She said my Final transcript will be available after spring break, but she said it won’t change much. I don’t think it makes sense since my GPA should go up like 2 or 3 points.

They must have made an error with your transcript, or maybe it really didn’t change. Who knows? Ask your counselor about it, that’s the only thing I can recommend.

If GPA is an average , how can you go ever go from not having a 4.0 UW to a 4.0 UW

Scenario:

3.98 + (4*100)= 403.98

403.98/ 101 = 3.99980198

even with 100 more 4.0 semesters your GPA would remain below a 4.0

Unless your school rounds GPA, but mine does not they take the first 2 numbers after the decimal place as they are.

But if you say you have a 4.0 then you have a 4.0, I guess every school is different about calculating GPA thats why they send school reports as well.

Good Luck all with UVA decisions
