Question about class sizes at Syracuse

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here knows what kind of class sizes would one find freshman year. In particular I was wondering about classes in the business school, Newhouse and typical freshman general ed classes. Thanks in advance.

It truly depends on what you take. I can’t help you with Whitman, but I;m Newhouse so I can give insight there. Your freshman year, in Newhouse you’ll have to take COM 101 (probably around 100 people but only about 50-60 will show up for each class), COM 117 (maybe 25 people at most), and COM 107 (probably around 100 people or so). Assuming you go the normal route and try to knock out some language, math and science requirements early you’ll end up in some lecture hall classes. I took MAT 221 (statistics) which had about 150-200 people or so but 100 people showed up on a great day and CHE 113 (forensic sciences) which had at least 130 people. As far as language i took Arabis and there were maybe 12 people in my class, so up that to about 20-25 if you take a more conventional language like Spanish or French. As far as humanities and social science gen eds, there is too much variety for me to give you a blanket number, but if you have questions about more specific classes I’d be happy to try to get you some answers.

@livewire1097 Thanks so much. That’s very helpful. I’m kind of surprised the classes are so big for a private school. How do you find it, being in large classes? Is it easy to get distracted? Do you miss having discussions? Is it easy to skip class and not get noticed? These are my concerns for my D. Thanks again.

Also, how do you like Syracuse? Glad you went?
