I am a rising sophomore in Newhouse majoring in Television, Radio, and Film with a minor in Management Studies in Whitman. I am very involved on campus and know people in every college and most majors. I am also an orientation leader and was a leader at Own the Dome.

Hi cuseyou,
I’m currently a junior planning to apply early decision to Newhouse in November. Could you tell me what you think my chances are?
GPA: 3.3 (unweighted)
SAT: 1730 (retaking in June)
Rigor: 2 AP Classes so far. I will be taking an AP class and a college in the classroom class next year.
Extracurriculars: School Newspaper (2 years, editor positions for both), Literary Magazine (1 year, editor-in-chief next year), School Band (6 years), Youth Symphony (2 years), Amnesty Interact Club, Varsity Cheerleading (2 years), Track/Field (1 year), Tennis (1 year)
I’ve also attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention, held at Columbia University.
Thanks!

hello @cuseyou!
i’m headed to newhouse this fall as a freshman and i recently got the email to start registering for courses. i just wanted any input on what the best freshman classes are? what were your personal experiences with your classes so far? i’m having trouble deciding between ast 101 (( i heard the professor was great)) and bio 121 ((the professor ratings were a bit weaker in comparison, but i did take ap bio)).
thanks for your help!
@littlemissbang congtats on newhouse!
you want to take classes that knock out your requirements so math, science, etc
if you want a good easy math class, i suggest MAT 121
for a science, i have heard things about both ast and bio. i suggest taking EAR110 for a lab and EAR117 for your non lab, they both have good professors and are relatively simple
@cuseyou - when you say “I have heard things about both ast and bio” are those good or bad things??
@Cameron121 i’ve heard both good and bad
many people are surprised about how difficult AST101 is, but with a good professor. my roommate did bio121 and loved it and loved the professor as well.
My son just submitted his course selections including AST101 as his science - I guess he can decide for himself…
@cuseyou do you know if bio 121 and ap bio are comparable at all? i took ap bio my junior year, but only got a 3 on the test LOL so i’'m stuck in the awkward position where i kind of want to take it because i’ve already been through the material once… but it also might just kick my but again ahaha
@Cameron121 ast101 is a good course, with a good professor, just not as easy as most people expect
@littlemissbang i don’t know much about bio121 vs ap bio but from what i’ve heard they are very similar. if you take it and need help, there are many resources that are able to help you. i would make use of office hours (with EVERY professor!!!) -I’ll get more info on bio 121 for you!
@cuseyou oh i would actually really appreciate that! i was also wondering if it’s /required/ for me to take both of the courses that make up bio 121 because i’m under the impression that there is a second part? ((it says “the first of a two-course sequence”)) also! is bio 121 more time consuming than other lab courses like ast 101? … albeit any lab course is probably inherently time consuming already.
@littlemissbang My son is taking Bio 121 in the Fall. The textbook listed is the exact one (later edition) he used for AP bio in high school so I expect the content to be very similar. you don’t have to take the second semester of bio but if you are in CAS, you need a two-course sequence in a natural science so most students take 123/4 as their second in the sequence. In Newhouse, it may be different.
i have a unweighted 3.3 gpa and a 2100sat (trying to bring it up to 2300). president of leos club, volunteer at the lubrary 300+hours, member of three clubs for three years so far (im a junior).
