I'm interested in taking some math courses in college to supplement my potential majors (Political Science/Philosophy). I took the math placement exam at my college and tested into Calculus with Analytic Geometry. During the summer of sophomore year, I took a course in Algebra II so that I could take precalculus as a junior. My teacher recommended that I not take calculus as a senior because it would be an even larger leap than the one I'd previously undertaken. Would Calculus with Analytic Geometry be too daunting for someone who didn't take calculus as a senior? Should I start out in something like College Algebra to transition into calculus? I'd like to avoid the latter, because it makes me look as if I bombed the placement test. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you tested into the Calculus program at your college you might as well trsut that they know what they are doing and believe that you will be able to handle the work. Taking a less rigorous course will probably be a waste of time in terms of your learning.

i agree with mol...I am also a poli sci major and I took calc. I really enjoyed it. plus it is great preparation for stats classes, which you should also take if you are going to be poli sci and want to do any kind of research

Ok. I was in your exact position 6 years ago and taking calculus without any previous experience in calculus was a great decision! I ended up trying harder than all of the other kids in the class and ended up with an A+ on my first exam due to my hard work and determination. I seriously thought I was making a big mistake after my first calc class, but talked to the prof after class and expressed my concern. She told me that as long as I kept up with the practice sets I'd do well. I did and I did. I ended up getting A's in all three calc classes and a B+ in Diff Eq.

At first I thought I'd just get by with the calc class and not take math again. But I ended up taking more math than I ever thought I would and enjoyed every class!

Sorry if this is jarbled, I'm busy today and have to get back to running the lab. Just wanted to tell you there are others out there that have felt like you do currently!
