<p>I was wondering if for the essays we should just state our achievements and blah blah blah, or take a more creative writing approach to it while still talking about academics and ec's.</p>

<p>It’s not talking about yourself. It’s revealing, through your essay. The essay is a chance for adcoms to see who you are, behind the stats and activities (which are listed elsewhere on the CA.)</p>
<p>You can see the advice about essays on most colleges’ websites. You can see it on collegeboard. And you can google to see how many top schools discuss this. (Start with the colleges themselves- not the advice from professionals or essay web sites.)
And, you can look at the prompts on the Common App.</p>
