Question about common application-supplementary materials

I have a question I am wondering if someone could answer. Common application, the supplementary materials file upload at the bottom concerning creative and performing arts - is that only for students wishing to major in creative and performing arts or are all students welcome to submit material?
Thanks.

It depends on the colleges. Some welcome them from any applicant as an enhancement or to show outside interests. Many many many colleges want nothing at all.

Thanks T26E4. I mean for Columbia College.

Columbia University (not Columbia College – that’s a school in Chicago) does accept supplemental materials. Just be judicious about what you send. Mediocre stuff will water down a good application. Good luck

Columbia has some very talented students who are involved in creative and/or performing arts even though they’re not majoring in those areas, and has an interest in continuing to attract such students. If you’re very talented, supplemental materials can help your application (assuming you’re also academically qualified). Conversely if your supplemental materials do not display a high level of talent, they can be counterproductive.

Here’s a link to what Columbia has to say specifically about submitting supplemental materials:

You should go to the link and read the whole thing. I’m not sure I would characterize their view as “welcoming” supplements, but they do recognize that in some cases a supplement can be helpful to their admissions decision. I’d suggest that you consult with a teacher or two as to their honest assessment of your talent level and whether a supplement would be helpful to your applicaiton, and then decide whether to submit one.

Thanks nynyparent and T26E4 !

@T26E4 : Columbia College, the college within Columbia University, is very much called that these days. More properly, Columbia College, New York City - a College of Columbia University.
