Hello. I am a 17 year old student that’s undergoing the financial aid process. I have a unique living situation. My grandmother has been my legal guardian since the summer of 1998. My biological mother lives with me, but she is unfit to take care of me because of her mental handicaps. My biological father is deceased. From my research, I have determined that I’ll be considered a dependent student on the FAFSA, is this correct? For the CSS PROFILE, when it comes to information about the noncustodial parent, would I fill out my biological mother’s information?
If your grandmother is your legal guardian, you would be independent for financial aid purposes…not dependent. You would list NO parent income or assets on your FAFSA. This would be the case if this is a legal, guardianship.
You will need to contact the colleges regarding the Profile. There are some colleges where, like the FAFSA, you will list only yourself. There are other colleges which request information from the guardians…but dont necessarily use it.
Yoir mother is NOT your non-custodial parent.
I meant *independent lol. Thank you so much!
