Question about CWRU Financial Aid

I just received my FA award letter and i am very satisfied.

But i just have one question.

On one of the awards, there is an award named "CWRU Loan-General Fund"

does anyone know if this is a grant or loan?

link would be appreciated.

Glad you liked your FA award. We thought ours sucked. Fortunately we have good alternatives.

Not sure what the “CWRU Loan-General Fund” is, but if it is similar to most of the rest of Case’s FA package then I’d assume the “loan” portion of the name may be a clue as to its purpose.

It’s a loan.

As a parent funding D education, I am struggling with the huge difference in Case’s aid package (Merit and finaid) and tuition. With an list price of $52k and and a low merit aid of 16k, that leaves a $36k spend per year. Our EFC is $21K but Case must not use that in figuring aid. What really hurts is 2 other private Ohio nursing schools have offered her room/board/tuition all in for $10k. The students at those schools pass their State boards at an equal rate as Case.
Any suggestions ?

Contact the Case FA office/rep and tell them about the offers from the other schools. Also point out the EFC gap. Often schools will bump their FA if they know you are really interested and they consider the other schools comparable.
Good luck!

Let me know if you have any success. My daughter is also a prospective CWRU nursing student and our “gap” is 12K after deducting our EFC, scholarships / merit aid and Case maximizing HER loans. Although CWRU is my daughter’s first choice, there are certainly better financial choices for us with higher “ranked” nursing programs.

Aglages - I’m glad you responded. We got $0 financial aid (I don’t consider a loan at a rate higher than a home equity loan financial aid). I do plan on asking about the gap and will let you know. Not sure if the wife and daughter see it as I do - I am really struggling with the 100k more for CWRU

Boeingfan: Couldn’t agree more. While my daughter is not too happy, she does understand that 300 more clinical hours at CWRU is not enough just justify the huge amount of debt necessary to attend. Don’t get me wrong, I think Case is an excellent school. Just that IMHO it may not be worth the premium it cost to attend for MY family.

Please be sure to post how your appeal for more FA works out…and good luck.

Aglages - WIfe reminded me to check my numbers and make sure I was comparing apples to apples. She was right - the other best offer turns out to be $22k vs Case’s $36k. Also had the our wrong EFC - its $30k, So the lack of outright financial grant is more understandable.
WIth this correct data, I feel much better about Case. That’s where she’ll go.
Good luck
